Here's a secret: Facebook calls them 'friends.' But for most of us, those hundreds of friends are just acquaintances, people we've met once and deemed worthy enough to be added to our list of FB friends. I think part of it is about looking cool, the more friends you have the more popular you seem. But no one has hundreds of friends. Facebook friends? Maybe. But not real friends.

As Amanda said, people (I'll admit, I've done it too) add people who they aren't necessarily friends with, but if they have seen them around or maybe spoken once they add them.

And here you are living, despite it all.

I've got a LOT of people added on Facebook who aren't really my "friends" I may have just sat next to them in maths in school and barely talked to them.

I know alot of people who add everyone they know. A few friends i know have added everyone in their grad classes, people they don't talk to, so they say its alot of friends but really i bet they don't talk to half.

But yes i always wondered how they have that many friends too

I know some people who just accept any friend request they get, I know people who friend request people just to have a large amount of friends and like said, you have people who will meet someone once and you add each other on Facebook. I have over a hundred friends on Facebook but I'm only really close friends with a few of them, most are people I've meet once, or live in the same area as me or something. As for twitter, people just follow each other, doesn't mean your friends.

I add a lot of people as "friends" on Facebook because, frankly, that's the easiest way to get ahold of them! E-mail seems to be obsolete nowadays... everyone checks Facebook for messages, notifications, event info, etc.

I definitely don't add everyone I know. Though, I do add people who've made an impression on me. Also, I add people who have several mutual friends. I've had people add me who I have actually never met, but we have like 50 mutual friends. So I'm like, "Okay, whatever." I really don't care.

Out of my 205 Facebook friends, I maybe talk to 10 of them on a regular basis--and that's counting family.

Instead of asking for someone's phone number, it's more like, "Hey, are you on Facebook?"

It's the best way to get to know people; though, some people are all about the numbers. I know people with over 2,000 FB friends. I'm sure they talk to all 2,000 every day, right? :P
