Question Mum has flashbacks. - March 13th 2011, 03:51 PM

Been meaning to post this for a while now. I just remembered it, so I'm gonna be curious and ask why.

In 2004, me, my mum, my brother, my sister and my uncle were involved in a car crash. It wasn't at high speed, neither was it on a main road. It was actually at about 10 o clock at night (the night Nadia won big brother, that's how I remember it) and we were 2 minutes away from home on the way back from my nan's house. A woman did a U-turn and hit the side of our car. My mum, who was driving, tried to gain control of the car, she swore, and ended up driving up the railings in an attempt to stop us driving head on into a brick wall. The car ended up on it's roof.

She came out of it with a fractured wrist, and everyone else was fine. The thing I want to know is this. She told me a while ago that she still wakes up in the night after having a flashback to the accident, and thinking she's crashed the car again. It's been seven years, and I just want to know why so long afterwards, she's still seeing these things. She's not mentally scarred by it or anything, and it doesn't bother her massively, it's just basically a nightmare that she has quite a bit, re-enacting the night the car was turned upside down.

Re: Mum has flashbacks. - March 13th 2011, 06:06 PM

Hey Hollie,
Well, there's something called PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). This happens when a person has been through a traumatic incident. Sometimes what happens is that the initial or entire shock of the incident causes the mind to relive these incidences again and again, because the mind at that moment was under such stress and trauma. Also, she was responsible for 4 other people in the car, all being her family. And the fact that she felt that everyone in the car could have been gravely injured, she would blame herself if anything had happened to any of you.

PTSD, may vary in intensity. They manifest themselves in dreams, flashbacks, etc. They could sometimes go away and come back after long periods of time. The intensity of their fear and trauma differs from person to person. Your mom may not be affected that much by it, but it's still affecting her a bit. And it happens. But it'll go away after a while. So you don't have to worry. Only if it becomes a problem for her, it's serious.
Hope that answers your question.
Take care <33

Thankyou! This seems to make sense with the situation she described so thankyou. I don't think it's serious for her, it doesn't seem to affect the way she operates or anything, so hopefully it's just mild and will pass soon. The accident affected her patience on the road and gave her athritis but they seem to be the only things that could be classed as serious (although road rage hasn't gotten her in trouble or anything).

Thanks for taking the time to answer this.

Your mother is experiencing Post traumatic stress disorder, as mentioned. She is still having bad memories of the event. That must have been really shocking for you to go through that. I can only imagine the horrors that your mother must feel. Be there for her. Understand the pain she is feeling. Your mother has every right to be upset about that. It is a very traumatic event, and it is natural for her to have those types of feelings. Your relationship with your mother should be a supportive one.
