why doesnt he understand? - March 3rd 2009, 02:05 PM

I recently went to the doctor and they told me I was depressed and they gave me anti-depressants...so, I tell my guy friend, well call him Chad, everything.
So I told him about this because he asked me what was wrong with me.
Ever sence I told him, he has acted like I'm contagious or something. He told me anti-depressants are for whimps and that I need to get over it and grow a backbone. And Obviously, this isnt helping my situation at all. I've told him that all I'm looking for right now is someone to support me but he just doesnt.
any advide?

It sounds to me like he doesn't understand what depression really is. Maybe try to explain to him that it's not in your control and that if it was, a doctor wouldn't have given you medication for it. But friends are supposed to be supportive and if he's not going to do that, maybe he's not that great of a friend. But I really do think he's saying that stuff because he doesn't fully understand that depression isn't just cured by trying to be happier. It's really hard.

Hey, well done for getting help, and im sorry that your friend isnt as understanding as you'd hope he'd be; why don't you try googling depression, as theres always guides for family and friends of people with depression, which outlines it and shows how they can help etc. this would show your friend you aren't being weak, and that lots of people suffer from it.
Just a quick google search i found this:

But you could find one better suited to your needs than me.

If you print it out and give it to him, or even just send him the link, it might help

Take care
