i just want to help :( - May 4th 2011, 09:31 PM

My 10 year old sister has ADHD.
My mom is finding it hard to deal with her at the moment as she is so violent and she throws a tantrum every 10 minutes.

It is taking a dramatic effect on my moms health (as well as my own and my 13 year old sisters)

I want to do something to help my mom and to help everyone else but I really don't know what I can do to help anyone.

I feel so useless most of the time

Since your sister is the root of the problem, I would focus on her first. What treatment is she receiving for her ADHD? Has she been seen by a psychological professional recently? If not, I would ask your mom to set up an appointment for your sister. Violent behavior isn't a typical symptom for someone suffering from ADHD... your sister could either have a co-morbid disorder, or she could simply be acting out and in need of further discipline (in a way that is effective, given her mental disorder).

Once your sister is getting the help she needs, I imagine everyone will be feeling much better. It couldn't hurt to go with your sister to her next appointment, and to set up a family session to discuss how you're feeling about everything that's going on. Communicate with everyone, and ask them to tell you how you can help. You may not be able to deal with your sister directly, but if your mom is too busy with that, you could offer to do additional chores around the house... basically, anything to relieve the stress in your mother's life, even if it isn't directly linked to what your sister is doing. =)
