she's interested but I'm not... - March 14th 2009, 05:18 AM

My best friend absolutely loves sailing, it is her life. She has been sailing since she was 9 and is really into it. I, on the other hand, don't really have a care in the world about it.
She goes on and out about sailing 24/7 and most of the time just switch off and think about other things. She is just about to get a new boat and she says she is going to teach me how to sail. I think it will be fun and am looking forward to it.
Most of the time i have no idea what to say to her while she is talking about sailing. I want to be interested in it, but I'm not. I don't know what to do or say to her.

Err, well, it would be nice if you would take at least a slight interest in something she's so passionate. I have friends who don't have a care in the world for dance, but I am in love with it, so when I do start going on about it, they listen and ask questions and give me feedback on different ideas. It's absolutely amazing and I love them. <3 So, it'd be kind of cool if you actively listened to her. I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

What is something you're passionate about? Do you ever talk about it to her? Does she listen? Thankfully, me and my best friend are both interested in dance, so we can talk freely of that without fear of boring the other person. Really though, that's just what friends do. They talk, and they listen to each other. I guess if you wanted, you could always try and change the subject if you had something more important [to you] on your mind. She probably wouldn't care too much. [: Also, I think it's great that you're going to go on a sailing trip with her. Who knows? You might go and find out that you love it!

Take care of yourself!

Hey there,

I agree with Katrina that you should try to take a bit of interest in it. I know you don't really know what to say, but the best thing to do in that case would be to ask questions. Tell her that you're looking forward to learning how to sail as well. I'm sure she would be happy to hear it.

Sometimes things can go a bit overboard with conversation topics too. It might be a good idea to bring up a new topic to talk about every now and again. I'm sure your friend is still interested in things other than sailing. Maybe bring up something you like to do and invite her to try it as well.

Nat.

The great artists of our time are the ones who created something timeless. But it was never them defining it that way.
Everyone has a story. What's yours?
