I need some advice ASAP. - March 15th 2009, 02:13 AM

My mom is a hawk about what I do on the internet. She doesn't trust anything on it. She recently found out about TeenHelp, and now she wants to talk to me about it. I really don't want her to freak out at me. I mean it's understandable that she doesn't want anything to happen to me, namely kidnapping, etc.

I think it's kind of ridiculous that she's so uptight about it. I know she cares about me and my well being, but I feel stifled by her. I almost wish that she's just care a little less. Or was less paranoid.

Can anyone give me a few tips about how I can talk to her and get my message across?

Hi nameless girl
Well, I empathize. My mother is similar in mentality. And TeenHelp is a pretty "gasp my child is on this??" site, but maybe you could show her the forums you only frequent (like R&D)? And maybe it could assuage her fears?
Or, if she's computer illiterate like my mother, you could just click a few buttons and really show it was all just innocent.

haha. Well I'm planning on showing her R&D, and even going to Terms of Service. I might show her the staff forums as well.

Show her it's a perfectly safe respectale site. Tell her why you joined. It may be because you wanted to help other people not get help yourself. I'm sure she will calm down. I mean it not like a become a drug dealer site or anything like that. Hope this helped. :-)

Maybe tell her you're here to help people? Or as above posters have said, show her a few forums that you go in, or maybe have some posts that you're willing to let her see, to show her what TH is all about?

Definitely show her the forums you usually post in and some of your own posts as well, like the others have said.

I think what shocks most parents is the 'TeenHelp' part, most will initially think, 'why is my child on this site?' Maybe explain to her you're on the site to give advice, not necessarily receive it, it might help set her mind...more at ease, you know?

Show her the Terms of Service...if she's still worried or concerned, maybe she could message an admin/smod with her concerns? Hearing about the site from them could help her feel more comfortable with it as well.

Take care of yourself. [:

So she asked me about TeenHelp and I showed her around the site. She didn't freak out at all, which is a relief. She thought it is a cool idea and I think she's okay with it. This thread can be closed now. Thank you all!

Hey Steph,

I'm glad you got this worked out. I'll close this for you now.

Nat.
