Unhappy Don't know how to help.. - November 24th 2011, 07:13 AM

Within the past two days, I have had one of my best friends overdose on sleeping pills trying to kill herself, and another friend who tried to commit suicide yesterday and wanted to again today. I talked the second out of it somehow, and got the first one's boyfriend to call her until she woke up so we knew she was okay. I am glad I was here for both of them, but I worry about if I'm not available next time. I don't even know how I helped them, and am worried next time it may be too late.

This is one of the hardest situations a teen will face: An ex trying to kill themselves or a friend trying to kill themselves.

I dont want to be a douche, but I have to say it.

Your not always going to be there for them, you just cant. Everyone goes through a faze, and some actually do it, MOST dont. Life is full of experiances, and moods, and perspectives. When you constantly save someone, and protect them from themselves and from experiances and different situations that you are only hurting them even more. Chances are they will keep trying untill they get that experiance. We all grow up and experiance different things, and someone cant always protect us from that because than what would we be learning? Nothing.

Be there for your friends, Talk to them, love them, and make sure they know that. But dont always protect them from things. It will backfire eventually.

I don't understand how you think either of my friends would learn anything if they were dead.

Hey there,

I think what Chris was trying to say is that for them to fully appreciate your help and support, they need to make their own choices and make mistakes themselves without someone trying to save them. In reality, you can't save them if they really want to commit suicide, they're going to. And in the end, the only people who can stop them and save them is theirselves.

Sometimes, people that make a failed attempt at suicide appreciate life even more and have a strong urge to live rather than die. I hope that's the case with them and I think that's another point that Chris was trying to make. With that said, I really hope that they do stay safe and they can continue their lives and get the help and support they need and deserve.

I hope I helped a bit.

Take care,
Brittany

Okay. Thank you both. I was just confused by the comment.
