I'm hurting my dad without knowing it -

I'm graduating this year, and hoping to go to college in the fall. I've grown up a lot more sheltered from the outside world than many other people my age, so I'm a little afraid of being on my own. That doesn't mean I don't want to. In fact I think the experience would make me a much better person than the selfish and childish one I am now. Anyway, my dad informed me in a rather loud and frightening tone that he hates it when I put myself down because it makes him feel guilty. I tried several times to tell him that I'm not trying to make him feel bad, but he told me I was lying to him, then said I was being stupid by saying there was something wrong with me. The real reason I put myself down is to remind myself not to be so selfish. Any help telling me how to convince him of that would be greatly appreciated.

Well I think you guys need to Sit down and talk alittle bit - have a heart to heart. He seems like a very emotionally in touch kind of guy so he should understand. Tell him that you do consider yourself selfish, and childish, and you just try to put yourself down to not be as selfish. Tell him that you want to better yourself, but just don't know how to do it.
If you tell him that and you actually mean it and tell him you love him, I think he will understand. And its true, you do need to work on those things - being selfish will get you nowhere. Please understand, no one can do it for you - only YOU can do it. The main thing that will help improve this is for you to think about others more than yourself. So volunteer for something at school since its your last year. Start helping with things around the house. Start helping friend or neighbors with simple things. It sounds stupid, I know, but It really will improve yourself after awhile. Remember, you have to live with you for the rest of your life - make sure you improve yourself and love yourself as much as you feel necessary. Best wishes, Chris Chris Jackson
