Never Good Enough For Him! - April 2nd 2009, 11:44 PM

I do fairly well in school... but no matter what my grade is my dad always says something like "only a [mark here]?" or "You should have done better" I know he's joking most of the time...but when I tell him my grades and I have done well I really need to hear it from him. He never, ever tells me 'good job' or anything like that and he always compares me to my brother who is basically a genius... well compared to me anyways. I've told my dad that I don't like how he jokes about that but he still does it. I can't just never tell him my marks though. I'm sick and tired of working so hard just so my dad will be proud of it for once. Does anybody know how I could make him stop being like this, because I know I am probably over reacting to his jokes but they really do make me feel like I have nothing to be proud of, I can't help but think that he's not joking.

hey aly,

i got the same thing from my mother. he probably does not think that he is really hurting your feelings. if he says somthing like that again try ' hey dad, even though you say you are joking, i tried really hard to do well on this (test, assignment etc) and it would be really cool if you could actually tell me I did a good job instead of critisizing me all the time. '

people always seem to have no problem pointing the faults out in people, but never seem to be able to point out the good stuff.

best wishes!

=D
Thank-you, Ill try to do that. You're right, he probably doesn't really know that he is hurting my feelings. And even if he sometimes said it was good I would be happy, so this should hopefully work. Thanks again x]

If you think you did well, then you did well. Maybe you should not carry on telling your marks if it gets you down. Or maybe you can tell him straight that he's hurting your feelings, cos he may not realise it.
