i'm scared! - June 7th 2012, 07:14 PM

I am 15yr old girl, 16 in a few months and I'm getting kinda alarmed about my lifestyle...
I eat A LOT of very unhealthy foods. I struggle to have just 1 or 2 of my 5 a day, I'm constantly having takeaways like mcdonalds, chiense etc and I hardly ever exercise (only through PE lessons at school and the occasional 30minute walk home from school).

The thing is that I'm one of those people who can eat loads but hardly put on any weight, so I dont always notice it, but i'm starting to get worried about underlying health issues.
I dont wanna be on a diet or anything crazy like that as I know I'm too young, but I just want some helpful tips to allow me to be healthier and motivate me to do some exercise and lead a better lifestyle!

Thank you very much to whoever takes the time to reads this and responds xx

Hey Elizabeth,

First of all, you do not need to go on some crazy diet or something to improve your lifestyle. Crazy diets are not healthy, it's just healthy to change a few things up to be healthier. I'm going to give you a few tips, and you don't have to take all of them! Change the things in life that you are most comfortable changing.

1. Limit your soda/pop/fizzy drink consumption. It is incredibly unhealthy for you, and is one of the leading causes of a lot of bad things. I would personally recommend three or less a week.

2. Limit your take out, as that was one of your main problems. Why don't you make one special day a week that you get to get a take out of your choice? That would make that day super awesome, something you can look forward to, but you still get the delicious food of your choice? You'll also save a lot of money this way.

3. Up your vegetable and fruit consumption. Try for the whole 5 a day thing. This seems really difficult, but take this example. Have your regular breakfast, and just add in an apple and a glass of orange juice. For lunch, have chicken salad with the delicious chicken and whatever dressing you want but with some good spinach and other veggies and for dinner you can have a burger made to your liking, but also have a side salad and some cooked green beans. Take your regular diet, and just throw in a bunch of veggies! At worst case, start drinking that V8 stuff, I'm not sure if they have it in the UK, but it's a juice that has a serving of vegetables and a serving of fruit in it. I think they're absolutely delicious.

4. Drink more water! Just this simple tip will help you wash out the other nasty stuff. They say eight glasses of water a day, but really, that can be other fluids as well. I try to finish two pretty regular size water bottles a day. This tip can help tip #1 by being your replacement for soda.

5. Walk more! If it's close enough to walk, rather than driving or taking public transport, take a little extra time and walk more places! You don't need a crazy treadmill to just get a bit more exercise.

6. Switch some of your food to healthy alternatives. If you like hamburgers, use whole-grain buns, or get lower fat hamburger meat. If you like salads a lot, try to use Romaine lettuce or spinach rather than using iceberg lettuce. If you like cereal and milk, switch to a lower fat milk such as skim or 2%. Just do simple things!

7. SERVING SIZES. Actually read them and use them. Rather than getting the big bag of crisps, get the kind that have smaller bags inside, and only allow yourself one a day. Make sure you actually have one popsicle rather than 5. You know? Just keep to an actual serving size.

There's just a few tips, but there are many more things you can do! I hope that helped, ask me if you want any more advice!
