Oreos? - October 16th 2013, 09:36 PM

Seriously, more addicting than drugs? Apparently a college in Connecticut (USA) did a study on rats, gave them crumbs of Oreos and gave some drugs, cocaine and heroin, and apparently the rats loved both equally and got "addicted", except apparently Oreos gave off more neurons in the pleasure center of their brains.

So... I have a hard time believing this. And if it does turn out to be like... this proven scientific law that Oreos are like a drug, are they gonna get rid of them or what? Like... I love Oreos, I don't know about you guys....

Do you believe this? I heard it on the radio this morning... that's why I ask...

I don't believe this. I feel like some foods can be moreish and maybe that's what Oreos are but I wouldn't say they are like drugs.

Oreos contain sugar.

Sugar contacts the same receptors in the brain as cocaine.

Oreos are drugs.

Oreos. Nomnomnom.
Did you know they're vegan?

Well the fact that they contain sugar, anything with sugar can be addictive.

(Yay, Connecticut! Was it UCONN?)

I would need A LOT more proof to believe a claim like that. Oreos are amazing. But addicting? I don't think so.

I think you need an option in the poll for 'It could technically be possible but I'd need a lot more information to buy it'.

Also, Traci, not all Oreos are vegan.

I believe it and I found it interesting that the rats actually opened the oreos to get to the cream inside like most of us do/have done

Well, they contain sugar which is addictive. I don't see how they're anymore addictive to other biscuits though.

I still love them I actually can't eat more than about 4 at a time though, I find them too sickly So, I'm not addicted.

They have chocolate in them, too. It's like the dynamic duo of cookies. Throw in that yummy icing-like stuff in the center, and the crunchiness of the cookie, and you have four of most peoples' biggest addictions: Sugar, crunch, chocolate, and icing.

And Tay, why wouldn't people respond to this? It's about Oreos! Everyone loves Oreos! Lol. ^_^

Re: Oreos? - October 18th 2013, 10:22 PM

I read this study and to be honest the methodology was really questionable.

It gave rats a choice between rice cakes or oreos to eat. Of course rats are going to choose the nice sugary thing over a tasteless rice cake but that doesn't mean they're ADDICTED to the oreos. It just means they like the taste of them more than rice cakes.

This seems possible to me...maybe not likely, but possible. However, I have no personal experience with an Oreo addiction, so I can't say for sure either way.
