Ideas for a healthy lunch - June 1st 2016, 10:45 PM

I normally have a brown bread cheese sandwhich and a healthy yogurt but what else could I have to go with it?

Do you have any food restrictions or things you don't like? It'd be helpful if I had more to go off of so I can give specific ideas. Also, do you have access to a fridge/microwave when you're at school/work/wherever you're eating lunch? Thank you!

I'm assuming you're trying to lose weight and put on muscle. Correct me if i'm wrong.
I'd say, try some grilled chicken and/or turkey. Low fat high protein. Fish or most seafood is great.
Quinoa is expensive but again a great thing to be eating. Celery is excellent for weight loss too.

Re: Ideas for a healthy lunch - June 4th 2016, 07:32 PM

What kind of sandwich is it? A brown bread (whole wheat, I'd expect? Or at least Roman Meal-eque) with cheese? There might be healthier alternatives to that, depending on what kind of bread you're using, what kind of cheese, and what other stuff you're putting on it such as condiments. It doesn't seem to have a lot of protein, just bread and cheese, so you may want to add things to your lunch that will keep you more full longer. Also, if you're adding specific condiments (Mayo, for example) that can be adding more calories than you expect. I'd also recommend you add vegetables to your sandwich, like slices tomatoes or lettuce. However, if you love your sandwich, there are ways to still make your lunch healthy without drastically changing this staple.

If you like Greek yogurt, I'd eat that instead of regular yogurt. It has a higher amount of protein. Typically, I'd recommend to get plain yogurt and sweeten it to your liking with honey and add your own real fruit to it. A lot of times, we end up adding less sugar ourselves than what companies do. I highly prefer plain yogurt and adding my own honey, it tastes a lot more natural. I buy plain mini Greek yogurts and pack them with honey packets (my work has them that I grab extras, but you can also buy honey packets at the store) and some mixed nuts that I mix in for crunch. Some people also like granola for crunch. However, a more sustainable alternative that my roommate does is to buy Greek yogurt in bulk, put it in a small tupperware container, mix some honey in it, and pack it for the day. I'm too lazy for this, but that's one way to do it! If you prefer your regular yogurts, though, that's fine as well! Those are just some suggestions of "healthifying" yogurt.

Adding fruits and vegetables are great additions to lunch! Maybe have an apple and bring a bit of peanut butter to put on it or slices of cheddar cheese. You can also bring cut up carrots and celery and eat those with peanut butter or just by themselves as snacks.

Last, another wonderful way to pack a healthy lunch is to make a healthy dinner the night before and make extra for leftovers. This is almost entirely how I pack my lunches. I'm too lazy to make lunch in the mornings, so I always make my lunch the night before and usually just use leftovers from my dinner. Pasta is great for this, it heats up well but also tastes good cold IMO. You can also do grilled chicken and a salad, chili, soups, the list goes on and on.

Good luck!

Re: Ideas for a healthy lunch - June 13th 2016, 06:52 AM

I'm vegan so I'm not going to recommend meat or animal products. Some of my favorite lunches are:
  • Rice and beans
  • Homemade soup
  • Salad (I suggest looking up recipes, these can be very fun)
  • Whole grain pasta with red sauce and vegetables
  • Quinoa lettuce wraps
  • Buddha bowls (usually spinach, sweet potato, baked chickpeas, and a lemon tahini sauce)
  • Vegetable sandwich with hummus
  • Rice paper spring rolls
  • Dal and rice (or curry)
  • Zucchini noodles and sauce
  • Vegetable stir fry (can add tofu or tempeh)

And here you are living, despite it all.
