How much water are you meant to drink a day? - October 14th 2010, 10:30 PM

I used to rarely drink water, I would only drink pop/soda. Now I've started college I've been drinking more water as we're only allowed water in class. I've looked online and get multiple answers :/ The average answer is saying 8 glasses of water. Surely that's too much :| You would be peeing constantly

I've always heard 8 glasses or two litres, but I'm sure I got told of liquid and not just water. But you get water from your food as well I guess?

I'd only drink when you're thirsty. The more active you are, the more water you need. But if you're living an inactive lifestyle, pushing more water into yourself than you need just to hit a target amount would probably do more harm than good. Being thirsty is usually your bodies way of letting you know when you could do with a drink.

Water is beneficial and good for you, but it's the fact you're drinking it (instead of things like sodas) that makes you healthy, not the specific amount you drink. A lot of people get caught up in the misconception that "It's not harmful, it's good for you, so more and more I drink, more healthier I get".

I think Liam has it spot on. Just replace all your drinks with water, and drink when you need to. It'll do you good.

I read somewhere that you lose 2.5 liters of water a day though sweat, urine and other activities you do and the body needs to replace that water. Keady was right food does supply about 1/3 of that water lost. So if food gives you 1/3 of the water lost and you need to drink 2.5 you would need to drink 2.17 liters of pure water.

They usually recommend eight eight ounce glasses of water a day. That's about 1.9 liters.

8 ounces is recommended, but honestly, it's different for everyone.
I have no clue how much water I drink a day, but I know I drink a lot.

I agree with everyone that 8 glasses is about right.

But the main point is that when you feel thirsty it means that you are starting to dehydrate already and that is your bodies way of telling you.

You want to avoid that as much as you can and drink regularly throughout the day and drink more if you exercise

well it is eight glasses i was told this at camp from one of the medics there he told me 8 glasses -2 liters to keep hydrated at least but that was because we were running around all day and i was the one who kept passing out so ya i believe eight its alot but it keeps u hydrated and ur hair and skin healthy and ur body

I think it's about 2 litres, so when you're at college, maybe take a 250ml bottle and fill it up four times a day.
Yes, it means you'll pee a lot, but that's good because it flushes all the toxins out of your system. It's also good for metabolism, skin, hair and concentration.

I honestly don't know. I just drink a lot of water. I think everyone should drink at least 8 glasses of water

It's 8 glasses and at least a litre a day. Its actually quite easy if you measure it out and all. Though I must admit, I mainly only drink water cept for the occasional hot chocolate or green tea rarely.

When they say 8 glasses, they mean 500 mL, but I dont' think thats humanly possible! xD I drink at least 1.5 L per day.

I've always heard 8 8oz. glasses, but a lot of other sources say that it should be 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water.
I'm currently on a diet that has me drinking 4 ounces of water every half hour. It's a LOT of water, but it also keeps you from being hungry. :P

It's hard to judge because you aren't meant to wait until you are thirsty, because thirst means your already dehydrated, but when you aren't thirsty you dont tend to think about water...well I don't anyway. Its probably good to have a drink at each meal, and if you have like 6 meals a day, thats 6 glasses already and to be honest I think that is fine, but if you can remember to pop in another 2 then you are well into a good hydrated day It doesn't have to be pure water though, fruit like apples and veges like celery are very much water...in fact all food has liquid in it. Also, a cup of hot chocolate does have boiled water. So I wouldnt get yourself pre-occupied about it, you probably drink enough without even realising.

Yeah, I heard today that 2 litres is good. You can do it easy. Just measure it out. It's honestly not as hard as it seems. You just have to make an effort to do it.

Yep, it's recommended that we drink 8 glasses of water a day. I suppose it depends on the glass you use, as well. But, I've been trying to drink up to 2L a day lately.

This may sound random but I find that carrying/keeping a water bottle with me at all times (even if it's just around the house) helps a lot since I tend to reach for it when I'm bored. Kind of odd, but I've been drinking so... all good, I guess

But, yes, it does make you pee a lot.

2 litres a day is normal, but if you're living in a hot country especially where the humidity is high, you must drink more. When I lived in Greece, on a very hot day I would drink minimum of 4 litres. That was just to keep my body from dehydrating. I didn't pee it all out, either.

Your body sweats to keep cool. But when the humidy rises and the air temperature is up, your skin can not wick away its moisture, so heatstroke can set in and that's dangerous. Best to stay in during weather conditions like that.

To the OP, keep off the soda. Its ingredients can be harmful if drunk in quantity. It's no substitute for water. Coke, the same especially as it contains caffeine, a diuretic. Drink water every day to stay healthy.

Driknking water is a good habit, but studies have shown that you only need 8 glasses of day from EVERYTHING you eat and drink. So you don't need as mych, but make sure you dring when you are thirsty.
