Vegetables D: - January 9th 2011, 06:01 PM

I've started to eat a lot healthier these past few weeks. Problem is I like fruit, starchy foods (bread, rice, pasta etc.) milk and dairy products, meat, fish, eggs and all that jazz but I don't like many vegetables

The only vegetables I can safely say I like are peas and sprouts :/ all the rest I don't like. How could I get more vegetables into my diet and try to cover up the taste?

Is it that you don't like them or that you're telling yourself that you don't like them? People are very often like this. It's highly improbably that you only like two different vegetables as there is such a variety of them and most taste completely different O.o

But you can try cutting things up really small, blending them in with sauces, adding them to mash potatoes. So really just hiding them O.o

I am a lot like a child when it comes to eating .____. maybe I just don't like the way my mum cooks them :/ she always seems to over-cook veg maybe if I tried cooking them myself I would prefer it.

I used to hide a lot in mash potatoes in primary school as my teachers would yell at me if I didn't eat them I could tolerate them a bit more than. I suppose I could try and do that again.

I have carrots mashed up with my potatoes so I don't taste them as much :P

Also, what about things like cheese and cauliflower? Or Pasta with cheese and broccoli sauce? Since cheese has quite a strong taste you probably wouldn't be able to taste much else

This is what we do when my little cousins don't want to eat vegetables. We put some in the blender with some water just a little bit so it comes out like liquid but not too much liquid and then put that in the lasagna or any other food they are going to eat and boom they don't even realize they are eating vegetables.

You could try eating them raw or cooking them, whichever you haven't tried.
Maybe try a very light and fat-free dressing?
You could also try putting some into smoothies are drinking some V8 juice.

I find certain vegetables much nicer raw, such as carrots, celery, broccoli and cabbage.

Try cooking them different ways? You could try baking them, boiling them, eating them raw, mashing them, turning them into a stirfry. Just experiment with them. You might find something you like.

Maybe use them in a salad?

I'm not a veg person at all. Always prefer fruit & salad.
As a kid I could only ever eat raw carrots and peas, but i'm slowly trying to eat more veg, and can now eat spinach and peppers.
What about making a vegetable soup? In the cooking group I attend, we made vegetable soup and it was sooooo good. I put whatever in it, as you can't taste the veg once you've got all the flavour in, plus if you don't like eating the veg bit you can always put it into a blender.

Re: Vegetables D: - January 12th 2011, 09:15 PM

I used to only eat sweetcorn, carrots and mushrooms.. then I started cooking for myself and now it's easier to list the veg I *don't* eat (cabbage, sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower) so I eat a lot more now! Stir-fry is a good idea- if you've never tried it then it makes even vegetable I don't like (such as cabbage :P) taste good. Especially with some sauce.. I also discovered that beansprouts are amazing (something we would never have at home). Try lots of new stuff because you might find there's veg you like but have never tried (sweet potato?). As others have said if its the texture that bothers you try making the veg into a sauce. When my mum makes spaghetti bolognaise she roasts veg in the oven (tomatoes, red peppers, onion, garlic (roast cloves whole then squeeze the pulp out), then extras like carrot or mushroom if you fancy. When the veg are soft whizz them into a thick sauce with a blender.. Add mince and spaghetti.. I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't like it and my little sister is VERY picky with veg
