Dorm Cooking - May 1st 2011, 06:35 PM

Hey Guys,

I'm taking a spring course this year and staying in my dorm. However, I don't really have access to much in terms of kitchen stuff so I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I'm trying to come up with things I can make in my dorm to eat. I've got a microwave, mini fridge, and a hot pot but thats about it aha. Any ideas?

So far I haven't come up with much and these ideas will quickly get old.
Soups, noodles, mac n cheese, sandwiches etc

Pasta with various different sauces so you have some variety.
Ready meals that you do in the microwave - probably not healthy all the time but having the odd one will mean you get to eat different things every so often.
Salads for when it's a hot day
Baked potato - it's best done in the oven but doing it in the microwave isn't all bad

Everything Cara said, but also, whenever you find yourself out for a meal (at a restaurant), consider getting a little extra of whatever you're ordering, and bringing it back to your dorm. Microwave it when you want it, and you have a pretty simple meal that's probably going to be at least a little bit different than your typical Mac n Cheese, soup, or ramen.

When I was in my non-apartment style dorm, I used to make those Duncan Hines microwave cakes for the occassional dessert.
As for food, you know the typical soups, pastas, deli sandwiches, etc. Baked potatos and salads are a good idea. You can add meat and vegetables to macaroni and cheese to change it up (I've done ham, canned tuna, hot dogs, and chicken).
You could also try things like the Lipton Rice or Pasta sides - they have all sorts of different flavors!
You could also try the frozen steamer veggies or meals for something different...
Also, try and get some frozen chicken breasts or strips to cut up into your salads and pastas or to make sandwiches OR to simply eat with mashed potatos (they have the prepackaged instant mashed potatoes, even in single servings now) and gravy (which you can get in jars or make your own with the powder mix and hot water).

One of the things I almost always did when I was in the dorm was take milk, fresh fruit, and bakery items (like bagels, muffins, etc.) from the dining hall for later consumption. :P
There's tons of stuff you can do!

I made a thread about cooking in the microwave, there may be some ideas on there http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f184-...ake-microwave/

I generally just cook noodles and pasta though D= My microwave gets used more for drying things out
