Rainbow pancakes

Rainbow pancakes
By Cheye (Tigerlily.)

You may be wondering how to make a regular stack of pancakes more exciting and colourful. A great way to do so is by making them 'rainbow pancakes'. For this you would need at least six colours to complete the rainbow. If you plan on cooking just for yourself and can't eat a whole batch of pancakes, try making mini pancakes. They are approximately three inches in diameter (7.5-8 cm), meaning it doesn't take much batter, and they cook in less than five minutes each too. The amount of batter you need to make will depend on how big you want your pancakes to be. They are made with normal pancake batter. Here's some basic instructions on how to make rainbow pancakes.

What you'll need:
  • A large bowl
  • A small bowl
  • A ladle (for putting coloured batter into skillet)
  • A big cooking spoon (for moving regular batter to the bowl to be coloured)
  • Food colouring
  • Pancake batter (I used boxed mix, but if you have a recipe you prefer to use, you can use that)
  • Skillet/frying pan (or whatever you prefer to cook pancakes in)
  • Spatula
  • Whisk (a fork will work too; this is to mix the food colouring with the batter)
  • Plate (to put the pancakes on when they are done cooking)
  • Paper towel (to set the whisk on between colours)
Preparation:
  • Set everything out in your cooking space.
  • Make your batter according to the instructions.
  • Put your finished pancake batter into the large bowl.
  • Have the small bowl near the large bowl.
  • Grease your skillet.
Tips:

It's suggested you do the colours in the following order, as the instructions will be dealing with this colour order. It's not mandatory that you follow this order, but it is recommended.
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Yellow
  • Green
How to make them:

1. Prepare as much batter as you think you’ll need for the amount of pancakes you plan on making red (or whatever colour you are starting with). Put the batter into the small bowl.
2. Put in a couple drops of red food dye, start out with two at first, then add one or two more if needed until you get the correct colour.
3. Cook as many pancakes as you can until you don't have enough batter left in your bowl to make a full pancake.
4. Without washing the bowl, add enough batter for your orange pancakes.
5. Repeat step two but with yellow food colouring, making sure to mix in the red batter you have left in your bowl. Add red and yellow food dye as needed. Repeat step three.
6. Wash the orange batter out of your bowl, off your spoon, whisk and anything else that has the coloured batter on it.
7. Repeat steps two through six with blue, then purple.
8. Repeat steps two through five with yellow, then green.
9. Arrange your pancakes however you want to on the plates, and enjoy your rainbow pancakes!
