My poppy died. - March 4th 2009, 01:57 AM

It's been a long weekend. My poppy (grandfather) has been suffering from Alzheimer's for 15 years and on Friday lost his balance and hurt his hip. After a trip to the emergency room the doctors sent him home with my nanny, only to call the next day and inform her of his fractured hip. My nanny did her best to keep him in bed resting all of Saturday and some of Sunday, but noticed that he was struggling to breathe Sunday afternoon, and made another trip to the hospital with him. We got a call at 11:PM Sunday night informing us that he was a very sick man and that the family should try and arrange to get to Newfoundland in the coming days. My mother, aunt, cousin and two uncles all bought tickets that night to fly out the next day. My mother just got to Newfoundland earlier today and called me an hour ago to let me know that the minister was in with him and that they would have to take him off life support in a few minutes as he was suffering and they didn't want that. I haven't slept since Friday, so I don't think it's really hit me yet, but I'm just really upset that I couldn't be there with the whole family (unfortunately a one way ticket from Toronto to Newfoundland costs $380, more that it would cost me to fly to another country!) I just really don't know what to do with myself at this point, I'm just worried about my nanny as she has given up her life to take care of him for the last 15 years, I don't know I just needed to post this for the sake of my sanity.

"Remember what you're worth
Remember you're worth fighting for
Remember you're not a punching bag
Remember you're not a doormat
Remember you are valuable
Remember you are repairable
Remember you matter
Remember they don't."

I'm so sorry. It must be incredibly hard to go through something like that, I really admire your bravery so far. I know it hurts, but death is a natural part of life, as crazy as that sounds. He had a good life, right? And you got to know him, and probably make some great memories that you'll carry with you for the rest of your life.
I know you can make it through this. You still have the rest of your family, and you can be there for your nanny. It's going to be hard, but just remember that it's okay to cry, to let it all out.
I'm so sorry that I don't have any other advice than that. I've never dealt with something like you're going through, but I know that you are more than strong enough to get through this.
I'm here for you any time you need to talk. *hugs* Stay strong!

I'm so sorry you weren't able to be with him and your family. It must hurt a lot to hear this all from miles away. I hope you can take comfort in the fact that 15 years suffering from Alzheimer's is extremely debilitating and there's no doubt he's happier, wherever he might be. Enjoy your memories with him, and making more memories with the family he left behind for you.

Loads of love,
