Yet another childhood hero - May 24th 2011, 12:38 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of death or grieving, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Well on the 22nd of May I found out that one of my childhood heroes had died on the 16th May. I am completely devastated, but I can't seem to cry. I am not sure if it's hit me properly yet but I keep pushing people away. I just can't seem to talk about it. His name was Edward Hardwicke, he was most famous for playing John Watson in Sherlock Holmes which I grew up with.
I can't talk to anbody about it at home because they won't understand, the last time I spoke to them about a childhood hero dying they said I was pathetic and needed to grow up. Now I just keep all my feelings inside.
I really don't know what to do!

Hi, M

Brand new here, but found your post via google, looking for everything Edward Hardwicke within the last 24 hours. Don't worry--your post is back on page 4, so your thread is unlikely to get spammed.

My dear, you are by no means alone in this specific grief. I emailed a friend only last night that every time I think I'm OK with his passing, I burst into tears again. I think you're wise, though, to be seeking support outside of your family. Perhaps it's better that the tears are delayed, for now! Anyway, I've only "known" dear Watson II for about 18 months, and feel like I've lost a dear friend. So, I really do understand. And I'm nearly 20 years older than the age displayed with your avatar, and so, even more pathetic and in need of maturation by your family's standards!

So...from the upper left-hand corner of the US: hugs. There is nothing wrong with you. And Mr Hardwicke was certainly a man worthy of hero status back when you met him as Dr Watson and worthy of mourning now that he's gone (all too soon!).

Have you been to Holmesian.net? (can't link, my membership is too new) There are two active EH threads that you'll be able to read without signing up. Only members can comment, but that's free (though it can take some days to get your final access to post).

I've enabled email from other users here, if you want to correspond. Keeping in mind that you're 9 hours ahead of my time zone.

Hang in there. Very best wishes.

Thank you so much for the support, I was eight when I first watched him as Doctor Watson. I checked out the threads on the website you suggested. There are a lot of people who feel the same way as me on there. I guess some people just can't understand unless it happens to them.
Thanks again for the support.

Nothings wrong with grieving one of your heroes. I cried for days when Elizabeth Taylor passed.

You're young.
