Question Good Gothic Fiction Books? Or good fantasy in general? - May 18th 2012, 12:40 AM

I just finished reading Dracula by Brahm Stoker and am going to read Frankenstein by Marry Shelly. Does anybody have any suggestions on any other Gothic Fiction novels like those? Or just anything good in the fantasy genre? I love dark and creepy and supernatural. I also like things based in legend or myth. Also dystopian fiction is an area I like. I've read hunger games series and 1984 and stuff like that. Any other suggestions? I'm looking for a good book for when I finish Frankenstein. Thanks so much!!

~SM~

PS: oh I'm not that into Complicated science fiction (although I did read Jurassic Park and loved it). So I guess I'm open to anything. I'm more into stuff like Harry Potter and Dracula and Graceling by Kristen Cashore (my favorite book ever!). Please no fluffy stuff like twilight. I've read all the series b4 there was even talk of a movie and still didn't like them then the movies just burned the very small parts of them that were sort of well done. That'd just my opinion tho

Hey!

In school I actually did a topic on the Gothic, so I'll see if I can try and remember which books we did.

We did Dracula, which I actually really liked. Frankenstein is the other obvious one, which you've mentioned. How about Robert Louis Stevenson's 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'? If you like the style of some of the older writers, you might like The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins (it's not exactly gothic/fantasy but it's quite good, if a bit long). How about something by Edgar Allan Poe - even some of his short stories/poems are worth reading; they're quite creepy, but in an intriguing way. I've heard good things about some of Sheridan Le Fau's works, though I've never read any myself. You could try Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' if you want something a little more like a parody. And again in the same sort of style, you could try some of Charles Dickens' works. Oh! And of course, since you mention the dystopia thing, have you read Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World'?

Oh gosh. That's a lot. I hope at least some of those helped.

Thank you so much! Those are all very good suggestions! I actually bought a few months ago this huge book on clearance at barns and nobles books. It's the complete unabridged works of Edgar Allan Poe. It is wonderfully creepy I hope to be very busy reading this summer! Thanks a lot!

The Specter by Guy De Maupassant is quite creepy and good. It's a short story, but still great all the same. I believe it can be considered as Gothic literature.
