Books related to mental health - July 30th 2013, 06:48 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Just wondering if anyone had any recommendations on books related to mental health?

Specifically related to time spent in the mental healthcare system, and/or psych wards?

It's Kind of a Funny Story - Ned Vizzini. This book is about a guy who spends some time in a psych ward. I haven't read it yet but the movie's pretty good so I'm expecting the book to be pretty good too.

Suicide Notes by Michael Thomas Ford is also on my to-read list and about a guy who ends up in a psych ward.

There's probably loads more but these are the two off the top of my head. There's a site called GoodReads.com where you can look up books so searching on there would give you lots of suggestions

I'm currently reading a book called Brain On Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan, it's nonfiction. I'm really, really enjoying it- basically, Susannah was experiencing all these intense and bizarre symptoms, but no one could figure out what was going on for a while.

Oh, I actually have a list of books to read about mental health. I'm currently reading It's Kind of a Funny Story - the one that Cara mentioned.

Also on my list (may or may not contain psych wards):
  • Sybil - Flora Rheta Schreiber
  • The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath
  • Girl, interrupted - Susanna Kaysen

I'm fairly sure if you do a google search you can probably find some good ones. I hope this helped a bit!
