First person or third person? - December 27th 2014, 06:28 PM

Which is your favorite to read, and why?

I recently realized that all my favorite books are written in first person. I think it's because I can really get into the characters' heads and get to know them, while experiencing their life through their mind.

What do you guys think?

I like first person limited for a memoir or memoir styled fiction novel but I don't really have a favorite. I think each style and voice has a place and when I write I don't choose one because I prefer it but because I think it works the best with what I'm writing. I also am open to reading different styles and then I decide if I liked it. For example harry potter was in third person and I still really "got into" Harry's head.

I prefer first person. I become way more attached and I feel like I can empathize with the character better.

I like first person better because it feels more personal and you get to KNOW the character and the feelings more. Third person feels more detached. I WILL read it, but I normally prefer first.

I prefer third person, limited preferably, but omniscient can be good if done right. I think I've just read too many badly written first-person novels. I also have a bad habit of disliking the main character, so at least with third I can kind of block them out and focus on side characters.

So that's four for first person, including me, and two for third person.

Maybe I should've added a poll to this thing.

I've noticed that most of my favorite books are written in first person, but I do not really have a preference.

I like both. My favorite books are a mixture of the two, but I think a few more third person.

Depends really.
While I always prefer writing in first person, I usually read books which are written in third person because it provides an overall insight about every character instead of just one.
But if the basic plot is interesting, I don't mind reading any of the two.
