Uglies series - January 20th 2009, 07:17 PM

I thought I'd start up a thread about these books by Scott Westerfeld. They are futuristic sci-fi action books that bring up topics such as body modification and self harm.
They are set in the future where people are considered 'Uglies' until they turn 16, upon when they get cosmetic surgery to turn them into 'Pretties'. But really there is a dark side about being 'Pretty' that changes some peoples' perception on the idea.
I think they are very intellectual and moving books, especially for being teen reads.
I highly recommend them, and I was wondering if anyone else has read them on this forum?
I also hear that the movie for Uglies is set to come out in 2010...should be exciting. These books would be easily made into movies.
So what do you think?

I read the first one. Liked it, but kind of freaked me out.

I love them! I own the first three. I never did read the very last one with the story in some random girls perspective though. I heard it's not as good. But yeah, I do love those books. The storyline is really good, and i've never read anything like it. I find that Scott Westerfeld is good at describing everything in the book.

I love the "Uglies" series. Scott Westerfeld is awesome- if you liked "Uglies", you've got to read "So Yesterday".

This series was great. It was very empowering to have an action based book be about a female! And how much the image message was conveyed was really nice, with a side note in environmentalism =]

These books are so awesome. xD

I kinda read into them--social commentary. Always have.

The series was ok, though my favourite out of all of them would be Specials. Extras was quite disappointing, in my opinion.

I found the same as a few posters above. Extras was definitely not as good, but I must say, I loved the ideas in it. The hovercams were really cool, and I liked how the main character's one almost had its own personality.
I don't know which of the books I liked best, though. Maybe Uglies or Specials.

Agreed about Extras.
Specials was amazing, but uglies is definately my favourite.
I never knew there was a movie coming out :O
how are they going to do that without totally trashing it?

I've only read the first one but have been meaning to read the other ones. This post reminded me that I should probably do that soon. I thought the one I read was really good, especially for young adult fiction. How are they going to make a movie though? It seems kind of hard to find people who are universally pretty, or at least really similar looking.

Extras was annoying, but I love the rest. I've read a couple other books written by him, they were quite good.

Re: Uglies series - January 29th 2009, 06:57 AM

I only read half of the second book 'Pretties' (I didn't realise it was the second in the series). I get distracted by other book sometimes, which is why I didn't read all of it....what I read of it was really good though, I reckon it might be worth getting the whole series.
