IS ANYONE ACTUALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT ART - November 3rd 2009, 04:35 AM

I mean really passionate. I was talking to my friend today, about how a lot of adults just can not understand the concept of art. How all they can say is 'How can you make a living doing that, you'll never make it' But for me and my friend all we need is self expression. It our passion and it bugs me when don't understand that it's just as hard as other professions. Even if I don't get paid doing this, I thought about it, and I completely fine with that. It's what I choose. Then they say it might be something you regret, but I don't see how self expression can be a mistake in anyway. I will always be happy that I choose this. I just wanted to know if anyone really feels passionate about art like I do. When I think of the meaning of art words can not express how I feel. Large hand movements doesn't do art justice. It's about feeling, views, life, experiencing life through the eyes of another person. I was just curious if anyone else sees that or is it something that is just something that is supposed to be cool now. Am I crazy and reading to much into this. How do you feel when someone looks down on you because of your love for art and try to say it's easy and means nothing? How do you try to explain to that person what art is? Comment?

Omg! I thought I was the only person who felt like that! I don't think your reading too much into it at all. The amazing thing about art it can be anything to anyone. You can't really explain to someone what art is, they either get it or they don't. My dad really doesn't, when I show him stuff he's like oh that's nice What I really really hate is when your working on an abstract piece and someone comes up and says it's easy because it really really isn't! It's not just random lines, squiggles and blocks on a page, to an untrained eye it may look like it, but it's the way the shapes interact and the ones that are echoed. It's really annoying when people don't understand how you feel about art!

Oh my gosh I agree too.
Art can be shown in any form. Art should be about what you feel and how you present it. Art isn't about whether its good or bad its about its intensity! I work on a few pieces in my spare time. I'm doing an abstract art and my parents are excatly the same they say oh thats nice...
I Love Art. It can also be said if you love something so much you will work harder for it.

I totally agree, art is something I absolutely love, it wasn't until about 17 I really found this though and it was a teacher who bought it out. However as much as I do love it, it has to stay a hobby for me, because like you I'm happy enough to not get paid to do it...

However I can't really say its a passion, not my lifelong drive, I'm absolutely fasciated by it... For me its colour and uses of colour, and in some cases the lack of that I'm really into. When people laugh, and claim that the only art is stuff that look like a photo I laugh back, because they really don't have a clue, its like a whole new dimension, something that a photo will likely never replicate...

If everyone was passionate about art, the world would be a very different place though...

Re: IS ANYONE ACTUALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT ART - November 3rd 2009, 08:03 PM

I'm very passionate about art. In more ways than just respecting paintings, sculpture, and understanding the emotions behind it. By this I mean... I find art in almost everything, whether intentionally made or not. I believe art isn't just creating things, it's seeing the beauty in things already created also. For example, nature, is art and I'm passionate about viewing it as such. The sounds of nature, the wind, the rain, all of that counts in my mind. Taking thoughts/things/experiences/feelings from life and conveying them into something physical like painting or sculpture, music or writing, etc. is awesome. Whether abstract or straightforward. Even down to the motions of the hand creating the art is art in itself. In writing, the handwriting itself, the way the letters are formed often intrigues me more than the words themselves, for this can convey just as much emotion as the words. It saddens me than handwritten letters have become rather obsolete.
Unfortunately though, the sad truth in my case is my art isn't going to pay the bills. So it's just a side thing to keep me sane for now. I'd love to get paid for my work, which was/is the ultimate plan, but it hasn't worked out that way yet. To answer your questions, it feels horrible when other people say it's something "anyone can do" and is easy. I don't attempt to explain it to them though. If they don't get it, they don't get it. If everything was so black and white and easy to understand, it wouldn't be as special. Besides, everyone is entitled to interpret art in their own way without having it explained to them as a right or wrong way to view it. That's why it's art. Just don't let them bother you! Have fun with what you love doing.

Re: IS ANYONE ACTUALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT ART - November 4th 2009, 06:48 AM

I'm so happy with everyone's responses. :3 It's good to know that I'm not the only passionate person in the world when it comes to art. My family will look at anything I do and tell me it's good, but they really believe that. So it doesn't bug me. I do plan to work very hard for art, which is why I think being in art school is good for me. I should work on it and try to perfect my skills. I'm still a little worried about losing interest once it's a job though.

Actually it really is not the fact that people hurt my feelings when they look down on a picture. It's just frustrating to me that they just don't understand. Then I feel like they are missing out on something absolutely amazing and I just want to tell them, but you really can't. If they say 'oh I can do that!' in a snobbish way, I ignore them no problem. They just make themselves look stuck and ignorant (is that a good word) I just don't know how they don't notice when technically, like Commiseration said, it's everywhere. It just kind of disappoints me.

Haha, yes, ignorant would be a good word for this situation. I think they see art as more of a source of income rather than expression so they feel the need to tell you that you'd be better off with a normal job. While I'm not incredibly passionate, I am getting more and more into music (I play the violin ). Don't let anyone tell you that you should give up on art. It may not be something that you can make a living off of but no life is worth living without art.

Haha, why thank you bound, though i'm upset that i haven't lived up to my potential by not having practiced as much as i should have. But it's fun nonetheless when you get the right music
