just a question - November 15th 2009, 01:47 PM

When writing a story and you put a number, or a time, shuch as 1:00. Do you write the number out? I'm just asking. I've seen it both ways, so what is the write way?

Numerals are used for exact times.

This link might help. See rule 12, 13 and 14. Actually, all rules are helpful.

I hope that helps.

I did not think there were steadfast rules for writing numbers. Generally it is based on preference whether you write out the number or not. Especially when it comes to time, you should not feel bad about just putting down the numbers. You can write out 'one o'clock' if you want to, but it is not necessary.

What about like "In the eath grade." Should it be spelled out, or "In the 8th grade."

I would write it out, so "In the eighth grade...".

Ages would be the same as grade. When writing, generally you would write "I am seventeen" instead of "I am 17".
Most of the time the only thing that is numbers are times like "8:00" instead of "eight o'clock".
I just find it reads better to write most numbers out, but it is a preference.
