Speak -

Has anyone read this book by Laurie Halse Anderson? I find it pretty amazing, we're reading it in school, and it's the first school book I've liked since kindergarten. I suggest it to anyone!

I haven't seen the movie yet, because my teacher says it's horrible :P
But once I'm done with the book (about 30 more pages) I'll rent it. But those sequins on her dress.. boy, they threw you over the edge. |

Honestly, I can't stand Laurie Halse Anderserson. She takes extremely serious issues and misrepresents them. Her writing is immature and unrealistic. Speak isn't as awful as Winter Girls, but it's still pretty bad. Sorry to any of you who liked it.

I haven't read it, but I've been meaning to for a while.
Nothing in the world is the way it ought to be. It's harsh, and cruel. But that's why there's us - champions. Doesn't matter where we come from, what we've done or suffered, or even if we make a difference. We live as though the world is as it should be, to show it what it can be. |

I really liked the book and movie quite a bit.
There could never be amore beautiful you
Don't buy the lies, disguisesandhoops they make you jump through You were made tofill a purposethat only you could do So there could never be amore beautiful you -Johnny Diaz Everyday is so wonderful And suddenly it's hard to breathe Now and then I get insecure From all the pain, I feel so ashamed I am beautiful no matter what they say Words can't bring me down I am beautiful in every single way Yes, words can't bring me down, oh no So don't you bring me down today To all your friends you're delirious So consumed in all your doom Tryin' hard to fill the emptiness, the piece is gone Left the puzzle undone, ain't that the way it is? 'Cause you are beautiful no matter what they say Words can't bring you down, oh no You are beautiful in every single way Yes, words can't bring you down, oh no So don't you bring me down today -Christina Aguilera |

I read it after I saw the movie. Both were truly amazing but what I loved about the book was how Anderson broke every single rule that they teach when it comes to writing: she used run-on sentences, script format, and other issues. It was great.
And then the story was just as great too. She really got into the head of Melinda and it was as if you were going through the motions with her. |

It was really interesting for me, if only because it was my first taste of "teen lit." I was in 7th or 8th grade when I read it for the first time. It made me think a lot. I was already in that quiet, introspective phase anyway. I just thought "...whoa." It made me feel cool, like I was being told someone's adultlike secret. I thought the movie did a good job of recreating it.

I remeber reading that my freshman year of high school Icould really relate to that one teacher hating melinda no matter what she did even when she was trying to the right thing. I liked the movie too I think thats one of the other movies I liked kirstein stewart in next to the Runaways she protrayed melinda very well.
