Five Senses - January 15th 2011, 03:52 AM

In ACT prep, the teacher was talking about using all five senses to read. I have always used all five senses to read and I figured that everyone else did too.
I asked my sister and she said that she uses 3 of her senses to read.

I love being able to see, hear, feel, taste, and smell what the character in the book is doing.

So how many senses and which ones do you use when you read?

Erm... Sight... reading is looking at text O.o

Re: Five Senses - January 15th 2011, 05:25 PM

Hm. Well,I definitely use all five senses when I write. When I read, it really depends on how descriptive the author is. If they lack description, then I only use the senses they provide me with. That's why description is important in writing. There are times I can imagine, but if the author really lacks description, then it's difficult to use all five senses.

There have been times I've gotten so deep into my reading that I actually did begin to smell what was being described, or I'd imagine what it smelled like. Like, for instance, I was reading a book about explorers who had discovered the Titanic in 1980 when I was elementary. I always imagined that the cafeteria food smelled like the Titanic after it had sunk. xD

Also, I relate certain books I've read to the music I was listening to as I was reading it. Like, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire I always relate to Mandy Moore, because I was listening to Mandy when I was reading it.

So, I guess, depending on the book, I use all five senses. I think it's more in fan fiction I don't, because there are so many bad writers in that realm.

For example, if someone in the book is painting their nails, you can smell the nail polish. Stuff like that.

I use all of them if I'm really absorbed in the book.

Mostly sight.
Really good books...hearing comes in next.

Taste and smell and all that is rare but some are so detailed I could picture all that!

But . . . we have more than 5 senses. You should include all of them in the poll.

Back to topic, to read, most likely I use:
Sense of Sight (to see the text, of course)
Sense of Smell (sometimes papers have some wood-like smell)
Sense of Pressure (so I know that I am actually touching the book)
Sense of Balance (make sure I don't fall off my seat)
Sense of Orientation (body awareness)
