Books you just have to read. - March 6th 2009, 03:45 PM

Okay well there's some books that you just have to read. I want everyone to post books that they think everyone should read, not just the classics like Dracula etc. but some modern books too.

Okay well I think everyone should read:

Of Mice and Men (if it wasn't for school I never would have picked this book up, I'm glad I did now though I really enjoyed the book)

Frankenstein (Thanks to school again I read another awesome book)

Harry Potter (Just because it's Harry Potter, although the last book wasn't as good as I expected)

I think that's all at the moment.

I recommend a book;

"A Boy Called It."

Its a true story about child abuse & its so disturbing & horrible, it actually made me cry.

I'm dying to read Double Cross, by Malorie Blackman. It's the last in the Noughts And Crosses series, and I just know it's amazing.

I recomend :
  • The Noughts And Crosses series - Malorie Blackman
  • The Little Friend - Donna Tart
  • The Handmaids Tale - Margret Atwood
  • anything by Philip Pullman

i know it's already been said.. but "a boy called it."

Also, my favourite book of all time is Lance Armstrongs autobiography, "it's not about the bike." That book helped me so much and arrgh, it's just amazing.

I'm a personal fan of Ellen Hopkins (Crank, Glass, Identical, Burned, Impulse) and Daniel Quinn (specifically the book Ishmael). I also love The Tao of Pooh.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov (I absolutely love this book. It's just so beautifully written). I highly recommend the annotated version.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (a quick, but very eery read!)

For more modern reads, I quite like Haruki Murakami's books. I've also just finished Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, which was enjoyable.

Anything by Ellen Hopkins, her style of writing is so unique.
Brave New World- Aldous Huxley
A million little pieces- James Fray, There is a lot of controversy around the subject matter of the book and whether it is completely true or not, but a good book is a good book nonetheless, I honestly couldn't put it down and it has made him one of my favourite authors.

Well lets see here.
I will put them together with an American Year of High school.
Oh how I wish I had my way, haha.

Fahrenheit 451 ~ Ray Bradbury (Freshman year.) and an Analysis of the book Sophomore Year

The Wanting Seed ~ Anthony Burgess (Senior Year) Due to it's graphic nature, BUT great things can be learned from it.

Night ~ Elie Wiesel (Freshman Year) Read with the study of the Holocaust

To Kill A Mocking Bird ~ Harper Lee (Junior Year) With a deep analysis of coarse

The Great Gatsby ~F. Scott Fitzgerald (Junior year) Okay, a lot of people think its boring, but it needs to be read carefully and analyzed deeply. Thus junior year.

Just started reading it for school, but so far it seems really good:

Sorry but I just had to add this: Weren't those books proven fake? May be a good story anyway, but I thought you should know. I kind of want to read it anyway though.

Hmmm I can't think of any books that "everyone should read". I could recommend a lot of good books but none for this thread so far....

Definitely Ellen Hopkins (Crank, Glass, Impulse, Burned) They're great.

Janet Evanovich is really good too, her Stephanie Plum books are hilarious.

And PRETTY LITTLE MISTAKES is amazing, I recommend for everyone.

Well, I'm doing a paper for 2nd year abnormal psychology on a book I re-re-read, Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us by Dr. Robert Hare (taking a neurobiological approach to the paper). Anyways, it's pretty awesome as I have a large fascination with psychopaths. I share plenty of traits with them but they have a few I don't think I do. Anyways, I consider them to be the future humans, the better humans, so that makes me almost one of them, a future human.

Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom... I swear it changed my life (for the better).

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower is also completely amazing, but... I'm not sure, but I think it could be really hard for some people to read. But either way, it's incredible.

I find it hard to get into books, but this one
really got me interested. I think it's the use of reality

Each and every one of Jodi Picoult's books. Every single one.
I absolutely agree! My favorite author of all time. =]

"The Crucible" by Arthur Miller (it's a play, not technically a book, but still a great read).

"Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson (possibly triggering...I've read this one about four or five times )

"Prozac Nation" by Elizabeth Wurtzel (possibly triggering)

"Just Listen" by Sarah Dessen

There are many more, but I suppose this is enough for now.

"Don't close the coffin yet...I'm alive." - Coheed and Cambria

Agreed.
Also, I've seen a couple of her books mentioned, but literally anything by Laurie Halse Anderson.
She is amazing beyond words.
Especially her new book, Wintergirls.
About a girl with an eating disorder, had to stay up all night reading it, absolutely great.
