What are some good books that are inspirational?
(Like about SH, ED, etc. etc. I think you get my point. )

Re: Inspirational Books. - September 30th 2011, 03:11 AM

"Beautiful Boy" by David Sheff (about his son's addiction to crystal meth)
"Tweak: Growing Up On Methamphetamines" by Nic Sheff (son of the above author mentioned, also about his addiction)
"Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger (about a boy who got kicked out of school & ponders his life & the meaning behind it)

I can think of other books that I guess would be considered inspirational, but not in the sense you're talking about.

I know there's more to list, but those are the books I found on my bookshelf. I'll add more if I remember any.

I actually found Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson to be very inspiration (at the very end).

How Starbucks Saved My Life by Michael Gates Gill. And no it's all about coffee. It's about how this guy had a bad time in life but turned it around into something good (he just happened to work at Starbucks haha ).

Willow - Julia Hoban

It's about self harm and at the end it's quite inspirational. However, I rarely get triggered by things but this book did trigger me quite a lot so just be careful if you decide to read it.

Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis. It's more about drug addiction than anything else, but the core ideas about recovery are the same and I found myself applying them to my problems with SH and whatnot. Plus, it's just an amazing book overall. If you get triggered by descriptions of drug use though I'd be careful.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

Purpose For The Pain - Renee Yohe was a godsend until my girlfriend borrowed it and forgot to give it back.
Cut - Cathy Glass is amazing but pretty triggering so be careful with it. Same problem as above.

I know a lot of books about those subjects, but I don't know that they'd be "inspirational"

Also, I'd like to point out that it's almost impossible to get a copy of Purpose For The Pain by Renee Yohe anymore. The only copies I was able to find were over $80 on Amazon.

"'Colie, you should never be surprised when people treat you with respect. You should expect it.'
I shook my head. 'You don't know--' I began. But, as usual, she didn't let me finish.
'Yes,' she said simply, 'I do know. I've watched you, Colie. You walk around like a dog waiting to be kicked. And when someone does, you pout and cry like you didn't deserve it.'
'No one deserves to be kicked,' I said.
'I disagree,' she said flatly. 'You do if you don't think you're worth any better...'"

A little princess by Francis Hodgson something something. I hope I got the spellings right. Its a very famous classic, you should be able to find it easily. Its about a little girl who despite loosing everything holds on to hope and how finally in the end her patience pays off.

Its easier said that done BUT most of the great things wouldn't have ever been done if they hadn't been said first.
