Do you annotate your books? - March 1st 2012, 08:34 AM

Books you read for fun, I mean. (: Like, do you add post-its, write in them, dog-ear, highlight etc? (: If so, do you have any good methods to share?

I've gotten really interested in doing this lately, but if I'm going to do it, I want to do it well.

Also, if you don't; is there a reason behind it? (:

If you want to; check out my poems and stuff under the "Self Expression"-forum.

You are BEAUTIFUL! <3

No I don't. I want my books to look new, like always. I NEVER do anything like that.
And dog-ear? Nah! I prefer using bookmarks.

I dog-ear, and there are a few books where I've written my name... but I don't often do anything but dog-ear it.

I've said it once, I've said it twice, I've said it a thousand fucking times
That I'm OK, that I'm fine, that it's all just in my mind
But this has got the best of me, and I can't seem to sleep
It's not 'cause you're not with me, it's cause you never leave

I don't like marking up my books either. I'd rather just read and not stop occasionally to write something in it as well.

And here you are living, despite it all.

I don't mark up my books intentionally, I'd prefer a bookmark. I do treat my books pretty rough, though.

Let it come and let it be...

I write down quotes in a notebook, sometimes. But I try to keep my books as close to new as I can, so I never make anything noticable. I'm kind of notorious for only opening books less than 90 degrees so that the spine doesn't break lol.

I don't read without a pencil in my hand. I underline things I like, write what I'm thinking, or doodle. I started it after my creative writing teacher mentioned he always wrote all over his books. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Sorry I couldn't be there, I was tied to a rocking chair.

It has honestly never occurred to me to do that. What's the purpose of annotating them?

I agree, I love my books in perfect condition, also I collect bookmarks, yet I don't use them. Weird right?
With me, I keep a pen and notepad beside my bed at ALL times. I am always writing quotes down from books I've been reading.

I read a lot of dramas and mysterys so i highlight anything ill see may be important in the plot later on or a peice of information or a funny joke.

my twin brother keeps his books pristine and clean [ he went to a lot of book shops to get a copy of the girl who kicked the hornets nest witht he "perfect jacket" ] and wont let me borrow any of his books in fear ill accidently dog tag or highlight!

I think the only book I've ever wanted to annotate was House of Leaves just because it's such a mindfuck and I didn't want to miss anything. Other than that, though, not really.

If I'm reading it for school, yes.
If I'm reading it for fun, no.

When reading for fun i'll add bookmarks in places i liked and then go back and write down quotes and notes and things later and occationally i write in them to the sense of if i stop in the middle of a page i'll mark where i am then erase it later but i'm starting to get away from that as well. I love my books and hardly open them all the way much less do anything like that to them x3

I do, but I study English literature. :'D It just seems to happen! I love my highlighters and cute pens, so a few of my books have been well and truly harassed. I tend to use multiple colours and write notes beside them, and colour code everything.

Guilty as charged. I'm terrible about this, I have two complete sets of the HP series(Christmas for soft-back and I won a contest for the hard-back. ) then a separate first, fifth, and seventh copy. My separate fifth copy is a mess, I have something written on every single page. My friends either love or hate borrowing books from me because the annotations I make are funny most of the time, but it takes away from the story. xD

I don't do this. I don't want any marks on my books, they're precious! I'd say post it notes is the best way because then you don't harm the book.

I don't. I only did once, when i found a huge spelling mistake. But i don't think its right. I don't want to be written on so neither does it.
And i prefer using bookmarks.

I'm very particular about defacing my books and I don't like having marks of any kind on them. With that being said, I wish I would be more liberal with writing things down in books because it would be easier for me to retain the knowledge through annotating.

Yes! Always! I put markers in, I underline what I like or seems important, I was know to write sarcastic comments on the margins or to draw odd little doodles. I like my books looking well-read and well-loved.
