Day of Silence - April 13th 2011, 10:24 PM

For those who don't know, the Day of Silence is this Friday. It's a day to raise awareness about gay, lesbian, bi, trans-gender, etc bullying. You stay silent throughout the school day to oppose anti-gay slurs, bullying, etc.

I'm participating Is anyone else? If not, you should consider it. It's amazing to look around the cafeteria and see all the silent kids showing their support.

Re: Day of Silence - April 14th 2011, 01:02 AM

I'm thinking about it. On one hand, it would be pretty easy, considering I'm quiet most of the time, anyway. But... Well, I can't really think of any reason not to do it. Maybe I should?

But how would you answer a question if called upon? Or maybe you could give a note to your teachers explaining the thing...? Lol. I'd like to participate, but if it's gonna rat me out to the school (or worse) to my mother, it's gonna have to wait until a later date.

EDIT: Just researched, never mind. Lol. I'll probably be doing this, so just as well count me in.

I support this cause fully.
And I TRY to stay silent. But I just can't.
I talk entirely way too much.
I try though

I would participate but I have no way of explaining this to my mom without her asking questions...

I will plan on it next year for sure though! I do support the cause, so any ideas as to what I can do as an alternative for this Friday?

Don't get me wrong on this...I do support it and all...but why should we be quiet for a day? When we are usually being pushed down and told that we should be quiet about our sexuality. I never fully understood it and probs never will. I am a huge supporter on gay rights, of course, but this has never made sense to me.

I don't know if this will help but the entire day is symbolic. When you are silent you are symbolizing the silence that those people who went through with the same thing (now I'm not saying everyone went through it but some didn't have people to support them)everyday for their school years and maybe even longer. Also by being silent during this day is like participating in a national "peaceful protest" against the bullying. This is at least how I see the day...

I'm absolutly for this. Unfortunatly I wont be participating because for me, it would honestly be impossible, especially concidering I'm going to a friends house, and I need to use my manners because I've never been there before. I'll need to say hi to her family and that, but perhaps I'll try it next year. It's a wonderful thing and hopefully many people will be able to take part. Good on you guys for doing it, and good luck with it.

Isn't that a double negative? You're going against the protestors, so you'd be supporting the event. But that's me being a linguist Nazi taking the piss out of you. Protesting seems easy: just talk during the silence LOL.

I protested as well because I didn't have classes and have to study. My cousin asked if I would come with her friends in this, to that I refused and told them a wall would be the best friend, it won't ever talk to you haha.

I wasn't at a school yesterday, but in the past I participated all four years of high school. This year, my friends who are still in high school generally did participate. They tell me it went well, and they had a generally good response from it, and higher participation than in years past.

I would've if I could!

I had to lead a team consisting of 12 people... Giving tasks and asking statuses, whilst running left and right, from point to point. No way I could've been silent...

"For one day we stay silent, so the rest of the year our voices will be heared"

This pretty much says it all.

I participated and it was great. You don't need to stay silent for the entire day, my GSA and kids at my school that participated did from the beginning of school to the end of Lunch.

Sadly, I did not participate. Because it was not organized by my school's GSA, if students refused to talk because of this, our GSA would get canceled, which kind of defeats the entire purpose. However, I plan to talk to my guidance counselor about this next year so we can officially organize a Day of Silence at my school.

That's a great idea! Our school's gay, lesbian, bi, transgender, etc club is Spectrum. They didn't do the DOS this year, instead, they decided to speak out against bullying. Which was fine with me, I would have done either

If you go on the GLSEN website under the Day of Silence, they have letters you can print about getting your school to organize an event. Go for it!
