anxiety paranoia help? - April 30th 2009, 06:11 AM

i have a real problem with anxiety
at times i worry about ridiculous things so much that i almost want to cry
i am constantly afraid of losing one of my parents or a loved one
i think of different ways they could possibly die going somewhere or doing something
i am constantly afraid that the guy who says he likes me really doesnt
i stress myself out to no end about things that dont even matter sometimes
if anyone has any simple ways i can try to cope with this that would be helpful thanks

You know, you've described me up there too. All you can do is keep reassuring yourself that you're being silly and no one's going to die anytime soon. Although if it's so bad that you cry then maybe try some herbal remedies to help anxiety or go to the doctor and get some medication for it.

Hey there,
You described me, too! I actually just found out about six months ago that my "anxiety/paranoia" (like what you described) is in fact OCD. Who would've thought! The most helpful thing that someone told me, was to stop worrying "what if" and start thinking "what IS". So when I started freaking out and thinking "What if my mom dies? What if she gets in a car accident? What if I'm left as an orphan" and things like that, I'd make a conscious effort to say to myself, "STOP. My mom is okay RIGHT NOW. She is alive RIGHT NOW." Kind of staying in the moment, you know?

In terms of worrying that someone doesn't like you, or that someone is saying things about you behind your back (seriously--story of my life!), I learned something that was really helpful: if you can find any evidence AGAINST your worry, then your worry is no longer valid. For example, when my best friend secretly hates me because she didn't talk to me today, I think about evidence. And I can find a few pieces of evidence against that worry, such as, maybe she was really stressed and busy and didn't have a chance to be social today. Maybe she has a lot going on with school. Etc. etc.

thanks guys this really helps im going to start trying these things because i really want to try and get over this without the use of medication thanks again
