I don't know what to do - January 22nd 2014, 07:59 PM

I'm supposed to be starting college soon and my anxiety/social anxiety is getting in the way. I keep putting of when to go to college, and it's just making the whole thing worse. Is there anything i can do to ease myself out of it?!?

Try breathing exercises, or you could look at the Alternatives Sticky at the top of the Self-Harm forum, a lot of the ideas on there can be used as ways to help calm yourself down when anxiety hits!

Hello, Courtney!

It's perfectly normal to be nervous about starting college. It might help to make a list of specific things that make you feel anxious when you think about college, and to find ways to resolve those issues. For example, if you write, "I won't know how to do laundry," then you can begin to alleviate your anxiety by learning how to do laundry before leaving for college. You can even ask someone to write down a list of materials you'll need (detergent, fabric softener, etc.) and steps for you to follow, so you won't feel as anxious about forgetting how to do something.

If the option is available, you may want to consider easing into college by taking community college courses first. The courses are usually much cheaper, and you may be able to do them while still living with your parents. I don't know what country you live in and whether or not you plan to move out of your parents' home for college, but community/junior college courses can help prepare you for the routine of college life.
