Jobs - January 13th 2015, 06:06 AM

I turned 18 in November and since then everyone has been talking about me getting a job. I don't know what to do. I can hardly talk to someone whose not in my family without stuttering and getting chest pains, I don't socialise at all. I go to college 2 1/2 days a week but I don't really talk to anyone there. Everyones saying I'm old enough to be bring in my own money, but I don't know what to do, I can't really do shop work because it requires me to actually talk to people. I'm scared and this is putting a lot of stress on me. I had a job interview just before Christmas and didn't tell anyone because I knew I was gonna fail, the person who interviewed me said they couldn't employ someone with my difficulties. I don't know what to do, my mum told me we will take it one step at a time, but I know my dad and his family are all disappointed in me because of it. I don't know what to do.

Re: Jobs - January 21st 2015, 03:40 AM

Im really socially awkward and had jobs I stutter, get nervous, list goes on, anyways. My first two jobs and almost NO human interaction at all. My boss gave me a list and I just did that and by the time I finished everything it was time to go home! And an other I just washed dishes and put them away. Again I hardly talked to anyone just a couple coworkers I got used to. So not ALL jobs require all this talking and stuff: you can work at libraries , grocery stores (stalking shelves) or like what I did warehouse stuff and dishwashing and again the list can go on! So if you really want a job, there are some options if you want! But if you don't that is still okay! Jobs can be pretty scarey! But don't get a job cause everyone wants you too, do it for you!

Angie made some great points.
You can find many jobs that do not require a whole lot of interacation with other people and definitely do not feel pressured to get a job if you are not ready. Getting a job when you are not prepared for the responsibility or the environment is not a good idea at all becasue the job will not go well since you are not motivated to be there.
Try making a list of skills that you are good at, any previous volunteer experience or technical skills you have and formulate a resume. Let your inner qualities shine in written form. That could help.
Also, practicing interviewing with close family and friends could be helpful. Have someone sit with you and ask you questions that employers may ask you. This could help eleviate your anxiety by providing you with a common template of questions that will be asked.
You can also try seeking out counseling services that can help with social anxiety. There are many theraputic techniques that can help lessen anxiety and anxiety is very treatable and able to be overcome by many people.
Hope this helps and things start looking up for you.
Take care and PM me if you would like someone to talk to.

"i don't care your intentions. I just want you to know my self-hatred never took me where I wanted to go. At the end of the day...I can pick at the pain but I can't cut it away."
