Anxiety. - September 28th 2009, 02:56 PM

Hey THers,

I think I may have anxiety problems. Everyone who I've told of these fears has whole-heartedly agreed with me. I know you all cannot diagnose problems, but I was wondering if any of you have anxiety and maybe had some advice as to what to do to cope with it.

Hey there Anna!

I have definitely struggled with my fair share of anxiety, so I'm more than happy to share anything I can with you. It might be helpful to hear about what you are specifically dealing with, because anxiety can take so many different forms.

But, a few quick thoughts:
Anxiety can manifest itself physically and mentally. Physical symptoms of anxiety can be a racing heart, stomach ache, clammy hands, hyperventilating, etc. When that happens, focus on your breathing. Take slow, deep breaths. Breathe in for three counts, hold it for a sec, and breathe out for four or five counts. The key is to slow down your breathing.

When you get anxious, either physically or mentally (like racing thoughts, can't concentrate, worried about something, etc.) try to ground yourself. Focus on breathing, focus on what you can see, smell, touch, etc. Focus on your surroundings. Get fresh air if you can, hold a comforting object, do anything you can do to calm yourself down.

Again, if you want to share anything specifically causing you anxiety, or specific manifestations of your anxiety, I could give you more specific input. But please know that I totally get everything about anxiety and am more than happy to talk anytime! Take good care of yourself.

Hey Anna,

I used to suffer with anxiety really badly and still do whenever i get stressed out - there are loads of symptoms and some can be really bad, but all you need to remember is to be able to keep yourself calm - for example breathing exercises and depending if you have any other physical aches or pains there are exercises you can do to minimise them,
usually i'd say if it gets worse go to the Doc's and then they are able to help with tablets and other such things such as counselling to try and route to the real problem thats causing you to be anxious. - however, most of the time all they would do would be to put you on anti depressent's (certain types help with anxiety) but from experience i'd say try and stay clear, as these are really highly addictive and can cause more harm than good.

all in all - trying to stay on top of your symptons is the best thing you can do.
This is a site thats run by the NHS in the UK, it has ways in which you can recognise symptoms help you realise causes etc.
