Help! - June 11th 2010, 01:59 PM

Im like on the verge of having a panic attack or breaking down in tears..i just need someone to talk to me and calm me down. im also very twitchy and cant keep still...!

Hey Georgia-Louise, I'm sorry I've only just seen this thread now.

When you feel like that, the best thing you can do is sit down and breathe. Take long deep breaths. In a panic attack your brain/body isn't getting enough oxygen because you are taking quick short breaths, so by taking longer breaths your body gets the oxygen it needs. It can take 3 minutes to return to feeling 'normal' so don't expect an instant change but keep trying.

Can you try and hold something that comforts you or that reminds you of a safe place, or a happy/good memory or something like that. And take yourself back to that place and the feeling. Or close your eyes and imagine you are on a desert beach, its peaceful and you are alone. You can feel the sand in your feet and see the waves. Its a peaceful and quiet place where you can get back in control of your thoughts.

When you are feeling like this, can you try and talk to someone? There is Live Help when it is online, or you may found someone to talk to in the Chatroom. Alternatively do you have a friend you can talk to when you start to feel like this? There is the option of a helpline, such as Samaritans or Childline. Childline also do a 1-2-1 chat on the web, just like talking over MSN really. You may find something like that useful if you are feeling like this again and urgently need to talk to someone?

thanks for the help, I was desperate for live help to be online but it wasnt at the time and I couldnt get onto chat because im on the school computers which doesnt allow it.
