Question Lorazepam? - June 1st 2011, 01:52 AM

I've been prescribed Lorazepam for my Anxiety, because I didn't want to be on a pill every day, but something for high-anxiety situations (Also, I have other reasons to avoid the daily pills, but that's another story).

So, has anybody else taken this? What dose? Did it help? Side effects? Anything else? Having some insight from somebody who has used the medication would be much appreciated.

Re: Lorazepam? - June 1st 2011, 02:45 AM

I've been taking lorazepam (ativan) as needed for about 2 years now, between 0.5 and 1.5mg. I haven't had any adverse side effects and it's helped a lot with my panic attacks and situations when I feel more anxiety than usual. It sometimes makes me slightly drowsy, but not to an extreme degree. For me, it generally starts working within 20 minutes or so, and lasts between 2 and 4 hours. Addictions run in my family and I have an addictive personality, but I haven't had any problems keeping my use of it to a minimum (around twice a week, which my psychiatrist says is reasonable).
So basically I have nothing but good things to say about it, provided you keep your usage under control and continue regularly checking in with the doctor who prescribed it. I'm sure you know this already, but if you start feeling worse or notice any side effects, you should tell your doctor ASAP.

Thanks Christine.

You pretty much said a lot of the things my doctor said, and it's good to know that she didn't skip on any information. Knowing that the dose I was given is normal too, that helps.

Hopefully once I start this (I haven't bought it yet, not 'til my boyfriend's payday on Thursday), it will help me with my Anxiety.

Glad I could help, and I hope it works as well for you as it does for me. =]

Never tried ativan but I have been on xanax a few times (both are fast-acting benzodiazepines), it's the best for panic attacks, interviews (!), etc. Apparently it can cause physical dependence, amnesia, and all sorts of nasty stuff when used regularly for extended periods of time. I've definitely noticed a psychological dependence (kind of like caffeine), but have had no other symptoms aside from drowsiness. I'd recommend it for out-of-the-ordinary situations you haven't learned to cope with that you can't afford to be anxious in (work, performances, interviews, etc.)

Thanks Ghost, though that actually IS what I'm using it for. I've got mine for the purpose of work, mostly, since I work part-time. But, I also used it when I went to a strange, crowded gig that my boyfriend's friend was performing at.

No, it's not a shitty job. It's nothing to do with the job itself. It's the idea that, well, I get anxious very easy. It's been speculated that I may have GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder), but nothing has been written in stone (though my doctor did want me on an every-single-day Anxiety medication, but I don't want that).

So basically, going to work is actually overwhelming for me. When I get there, I still feel nervous. I wash dishes, and if there are too many dishes, I'll have an anxiety attack of sorts. I did on my first day, my boyfriend works with me though, and he was the only other one working, so he let me rest. But, that's when we both decided I needed something for the Anxiety.

That is why I take Lorazepam for work.

That's quite odd that you'd get jittery, considering it's a sedative.

Update on this, by the way:
My dose was bumped up to 1mg, since the 0.5 didn't help. 1mg works fine, and as long as I have an energy drink at work, I don't feel tired from it. So, the Lorazepam is working out fine for me. No weird side effects, no problems doing my job, no addiction issues, etc.
