Photos of my babies. (: - March 21st 2011, 12:20 PM

They're *going* to be Venus Flytraps, hopefully pretty soon. I've just planted them. They're in a propagator, as obviously they need a lot of heat and humidity. They can't have tap water because of chemicals, so they're given manky rain water and kept damp. When they're a little older they can eat all the scary bugs for me.

I'm not sure how many of these are actually going to germinate (lets hope for four!) but I need some names for them. Any suggestions?

Namesnamesnames.

Thank you!

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Venus fly traps are cool!

I still have planted mine xD, I've had them in the box for about a year now xD

Ummms, you could name them after Pokemon, like Bulbasaur and Bellsprout

Oooor, name them things beginning with V because I like alliterations. Vince, Vixen, Vicky, Velma etc.

They can be a bit of a pain to germinate, though you might want to get rid of the propogator, since they can block a lot of the UV light. As for heat, as long as the room stays at around 20°C, it should be fine, since remember, the plants grow in the bogs of North and South Carolina, US, which isn't too far off our latitude.
As for the water, I advise leaving some water to sit out for 24 hours. That'll evapourate the chlorine off it, though depending on the quality of your local tapwater heavy metals or chlorimines might be a problem, in which case you can get water conditioner where you put a drop or two into it per litre and it magically(well, okay, not actually magically) makes it okay for it. I think you can get some for plants, if not, look for it in fish shops.
I just leave water out to evapourate and re-pot it in fresh soil every 6 months to avoid the harmful effects of heavy metal buildup. Also, remember to not use any kind of fertiliser, since remember, the reason that these plants first evolved to eat insects was due to a lack of nitrogen and misc. nutrients in their native soil, so if you suddenly put it in nutrient rich soil there's no way they'll germinate/it'll burn a mature plant's roots.

Also, for when it's growing on, cut the centre flower stalk after 3cm of growth, since flowering takes up a lot of the plant's growth.

Good luck ^^.

EDIT: Also, for inspiration, here's my Mandy .

She's a bit bigger now. And seeing the pic also reminded of a good way to increase humidity. Spahgum moss, put loads around the pot's water tray and a few bits on the surface of the soil. It's good for water retention in general too. You can get big bags of it from garden centres.

That's so cool! I've never even thought of planting those! I hope they turn out well and you get the amount you would like. As for names, I can't say I've ever named a plant so I certainly wouldn't know what to suggest here. But whatever you choose, I bet it will be awesome.
