Studying for driver's permit test? - October 11th 2011, 11:52 PM

I'm 17 and have never tried to get my permit or license. I haven't been wanting to because every year at school they make driving sound like its the scariest thing we will ever do. Now I'm thinking about trying to get my permit for now, so whats the easiest way to study for the test?

Most BMW/DMVs will provide you with a Driver's Manual specific to your state (location). It provides EVERY thing that will be on your test. I would advise you go to the closest one and ask them for the Driver's Manual.

You should definitely ask for a Driver's Manual. The test can be hard. For me, I was able to pass the first time. However, my sister failed twice. After she requested a driver's manual, she passed.

Read the handbook over and over and over again. Trust me. So many of my friend failed because they thought the book was boring. It isn't. If you can't read a 30 page book on road laws, then you don't deserve a license.

Knowledge is half the battle.

I have the book somewhere and I've looked through it a few times but I've never actually read it.

Just make sure you know the speed limits and the distances for parking. That was always the hardest part for me. Driving isn't as scary as they make it seem, otherwise there wouldn't be nearly as many people out on the road.

I passed the first time, but that's because I made myself sit down and read the book. I also had family members quiz me. The hardest part for me was learning all the signs. But I think it only took me about a week to get it down.

If you don't pass the first time, don't worry. They will tell you which ones you got wrong so you can study that section or specific ones. In the US you can miss up to 3, which is actually quite a bit of leeway. I believe the test is around 50 questions. But the questions are all from the manual.

Also, there is usually a website that they have with practice tests. It helps give a general idea of what will be on the test. I suggest reading the whole entire manual. Front to cover. Highlight things that you feel are really important. On my test, they had test having to do with speed limits, alcohol, some laws, and other various things. Pay attention to things like numbers and statistics. After having read the whole manual, go back and skim through it or re read it. High light any thing you felt you missed. After you've done that, study the things you highlighted. Take the practice test. See how well you did. Also, what helped was my mom asking me questions and I would answer them. Then I would fold the page and re-study it.

Really, driving is scary at first. But when you learn to drive, you'll start small and work up to the big stuff, like freeways. Have a good driver, who is confident to teach you. Friends would be a bad idea, as they could lead you astray- may be new drivers themselves. Parents could be biased. As in they could freak out more while you drive, making it harder for you to be safe and focused. Have a friends parent, or an uncle teach you. They're usually better. My mom taught me, but she was always scared...and it stressed me out. I highly advise drivers ed, as they will be able to teach you everything you need to know. On the road, and off the road.
