Volunteering at an Orphanage of handicapped children. -
October 19th 2011, 10:22 AM
Me and one of my friend are going to spend some time with the kids at an orphanage. These kids are handicapped.
And I totally confused what to do. I have no idea what all disabilities they might have. And I have never done this kind of thing before. Earlier I was thinking of telling them stories but since these are handicapped children, I am kind of confused. Any suggestions? I spent around three years in a volunteer project with young adults who had a physical or learning difficulty, and while this is not exactly the same, the principles hold true.
Do with them what you would do if you were volunteering with any children. Tell them stories, play games, give them a good time so they can forget about their problems. Being treated like everyone else is very important, as if not the kids may not know how to act in social situations when they are older. I saw this a lot when I was volunteering, but after a few years in the project they were more confident within themselves and started being more social with everyone. I would contact the manager of the orphanage or whomever is in charge and ask what is expected of you when you volunteer. They may have a plan for you to follow or perhaps just some guidelines. This is going to be a great experience for you, I hope you love it. Can you find out how they are handicapped? For example if you were working with a group of deaf children telling stories might not be the best idea if they can't hear you, but working with physically disabled children it might be perfect because not much movement is involved. Try to find out from whoever is in charge what sort of group of kids you'll be working with. And try a range of activities. I know from experience that most kids love stories, face painting, running around games and craft activities. If you know what children you'll be helping with you can adapt the basic activities into something suitable for them.
It sounds like a great experience by the way.
