Sign Language. - December 17th 2011, 11:49 PM

I volunteer with the kids ministry at my church, and one of the moms is deaf. I'd love to be able to communicate with her, since not many of the other volunteers know sign language. I know a teeny tiny bit, but it's not much -- just basic finger spelling and a few words. There's no way I'd be able to carry out a conversation. Can anyone recommend a website or book that does a good job teaching sign language?

http://www.lifeprint.com is a great site to learn from.
But to fully learn, you would need to attend a class or learn from someone who is fluent in sign language.
Hopefully the site is enough to help you communicate a bit.

Ooooh, my best guy friend is deaf, and he has taught me a lot. At first I knew nothing more than how to say "Hi, my name is Laura" and apparently I didn't even do that correctly. Luckily for me, my mom used to take a sign language class and had her book leftover, so I started by learning the alphabet. Once you learn that, you can sign everything.

The easiest way to learn is by asking a deaf person how to sign certain things.

They also make books that have a lot of signs for different words that are commonly used. My brother got me one of those books when I was learning back in 4th grade and it was pretty helpful as a reference.

I have a book that teaches it. I'm blanking on the title right now though. They also have plenty of youtube videos teaching some.

Do books really help? I feel like it would be tough because you can't actually see the motion. You're just looking at pictures. I dunno though. Maybe that's a better way to learn.

I didn't like any of the books I've looked at so far. I loved that website though. Gives you a video on most of them and I loooove it.
