I have a lisp - January 16th 2012, 12:55 PM

I never really noticed how bad it was before but I just recorded a video of myself for youtube and it's pretty bad I can't say "sh" very well. Maybe it's less noticeable for other people but I noticed it quite a lot when I re-watched the video

How could I train myself to say "sh"?

Celidh, we tend to be a little more critical of ourselves than other people are. As you said, it may not be as noticeable to others as it is to you. If you are really concerned about it, the first thing I can think of is attempting to try speech therapy. They will work with many, MANY types of speech and language problems, and may be able to help train you out of the lisp.

"Ignore the ramblings of the ignorant, and step on or over their crumpled bodies as you make your way to the top of the mountain. Eat upon their flesh for fuel, and, through your determination and will, banish them to obscurity and a life of complacency and self righteousness that is the hell in which they live"

Honestly, it's probably not as noticeable to others as it is to you. Like Alex said, if it really bothers you, try speech therapy. But, it's really not something to be embarrassed of.

As others said, it probably isn't that noticeable. But speech therapy is great. I had to do that as a kid due to my awful pronunciations.

My brother has a very noticable speech impediment, so I happen to know a lot about this. For where you live this may just be apart of your accent. (West Cockney's for example do not enunciate their "T's")
However a speech therapist will be able to teach you excersises that can help you in the long-term. Most like to see you weekly or bi-weekly and can charge a mimum of $80 per hour, and generally like a one-hour session every two weeks. It really isn't cheap.

The issue would have been corrected in early childhood by your family doctor if it were an issue, because in early childhood, impediments are corrected by professionals in government paid sessions. If any healthcare professional had an issue you would have been referred to a therapist to correct the issue as soon as possible. These issues are normally adressed from age 3-7. Chances are, you're fine. If any professional had even the slightest doubt they would have recomended a therapist anyhow, because it promotes wealth amongts professionals, and they wouldn't want to risk their reputation as a "good" pediatrician.

It would probably be free in UK (N.H.S. and all) but nobody really took notice of it when I was a kid. I remember people correcting me when I said "rubber" though, it sounded like "wubber"

The only time people seem to notice it now is if I say "Irish" I just avoid saying it So, if people ask why my name is spelt like it is I say "my grandad was from Ireland" instead of "my grandad was Irish"

I have a lisp too, I cannot say the letter 'r' so worry is wowwy ect. I also can't some words beginning with the letter 's' so sometimes i'll say hun for sun or something xD. I also stutter at times too. People probably don't notice it as much as you think that they do. I tend to notice mine more than others do. And usually when people notice I just laugh it off and say ' got a touch of the jonathan woss's ' and then usually they laugh too.

BROKE
the girl who seemed strong
CRUMBLED
the girl who always laughed
CRIED
the girl who never stopped trying finally
GAVE UP

she let her fake smile fade and as she did a tear rolled down her cheek and she whispered

' i can't do this anymore'

Can you maybe take a speech class? I don't know if there are any classes in your area, but it's worth looking for. I think a good thing is to work on saying words with "sh" in them. Irish, shut, ship, Trish, wish, dish, etc. Make it something that you do every day. Say the words slowly. And record yourself doing it. Work on it every day. I don't know how much it will actually help, but it's worth a try to do. Also, maybe look for videos online to help you with. Not only can you use the video for helping with your lisp, you can also use it for the videos section. Seeing as your vids officer. But like others have said, we generally are a lot more critical of ourselves that others are of us. So it's quite possible that not many people even notice it. Hope this helped!
