Has anyone else ever studied Machiavelli?? (The Prince, La Mandragola...) - April 26th 2012, 05:27 PM

Totally taking a shot in the dark here, so I won't be surprised if there's no replies. Just thought it was worth asking, I have an exam on Tuesday and I'm a little lost.

The Prince is probably one of the best pieces I've ever read. I loved reading it for leisure.

I've never 'studied' it though...

It's actually a grand book, although being forced to actually study it has meant that my tolerance for it has developed into a passionate hatred.

For the exam we're supposed to be able to write an essay on Machiavelli's views of the church, and whether they were negative. I've gone with yes, but am finding it so hard to come up with reasons as to why, and enough examples. It doesn't help that the whole class seem equally lost..

Go and look at Russell's History of Western Philosophy. He has a critique of him there and his impact on philosophy, aggravation with the church and why he had to term nature as God. The library will have a copy of the book.

Russell is perhaps the best at putting the philosophy into a context and relating it to what is happening in the world. But a lot of introductory philosophy books will do the same. And a have a look at the guide to further reading in the Penguin translations if you're not using them.
