Physics or Biology? - August 29th 2012, 12:59 AM

I got my school schedule today and I hate to say it but I was incredibly disappointed.

I was placed into remedial biology. I love biology a lot but I was hoping to get into the honors course. It must have been full or something which is why I didn't get in.

Now, tomorrow I was thinking of going down and asking my guidance counselor to let me know if anyone drops the honors course and to put me in it. But I was also thinking of asking to be put into honors physics.

My mom doesn't want me doing that because it involves a lot of math and I struggle with math really bad, and always have. Because of that she (And I) know that I will probably have a hard time. But my friend and I have had that teacher before and know she's really nice and will help you with it if needed. I really hate being in a non honors course, even though I will really love biology and it probably would help me more with becoming a doctor.

I was thinking of asking my guidance counselor to call my teacher and have her set up a time to talk to me about honors physics before I make up my mind. Should I do that or just stick to regular (or hopefully honors) biology?

Biology will certainly help if you wish to become a doctor, and getting an honours course will probably also help.

If you really want to try physics, then go ahead, but remember to think about the rest of your life as well as what you might like to try now.
As far as struggling with it goes, if you work hard enough, it will pay off.

If you want to be a M.D., then the biology is certainly more relevant, although if you're interested in a PhD, then either works. If you're going to go into physics, it's going to be math-heavy as you already know, so you have to be passionate about it (or any area you choose to study). Do you have a particular area of physics you're interested in? I'm not sure if it interests you but there is a combination of biology and physics, such as biophysics as well as biomedical physics.

Thank you both of you for answering!

There isn't a particular area of physics that I am interested in. My school gives us very few science choices our junior year and those are:

Honors biology, biology, AP Physics, Honors Physics, Physics.

I know that I'd not do well in an AP Physics course so that's out, and remedial Physics is out because if I had to be any remedial class, it'd be biology. I don't actually know what the specifics of the physics class is, just that it is physics.

Dez, you should definitely choose biology if you plan on being a doctor. Biology will be more beneficial than physics.

Well, after going to guidance today I learned it is impossible for me to change to honors biology or even honors physics. I have to either do AP Physics or stay in remedial biology. I am going to go tomorrow and discuss the AP Physics course with the teacher, but I am more than likely going to stay in biology. Thanks all.

I'm glad you were able to figure out what your options are. Since this issue has been more-or-less resolved, I am going to go ahead and close your thread. PM me if you would like to have it re-opened. =)
