I need motivation D: - October 21st 2013, 10:03 PM

I've had 2 weeks to do a Psychology assessment and only now I'm doing it -_____- As you can see I'm also procrastinating by posting this thread It's due in tomorrow >.>

I have no motivation anymore. It's odd because I am genuinely interested in Psychology. I just can't be bothered and would much rather prefer to watch crap on youtube and play Pokemon.

Hey there! Were you able to complete the assignment? If so, how did you manage to overcome the procrastination and lack of motivation? Different tactics work for different people. In my case, I tend to think about both short- and long-term goals in order to get myself going. I will tell myself that the sooner I get the assignment done, the sooner I can stop stressing out over it and have fun without feeling guilty/anxious. I will also tell myself that putting in the effort now will set me up for success in the future (whether it's the more immediate future [semester/quarter grade] or the distant future [great GPA and job offer upon graduating]).

I finished it at 1am and my college phone me the next day telling me my class was cancelled because my tutor was ill. Fail.

In the end I forced myself to do it but had the odd 5 minute break to watch some crap on youtube

In this situation i will think about the pleasure of having no other duty to do after completing that. This is the most motivating factor in my case as I don't like to get stressed. I will try to avoid that. Also I would think that this the only time that I can make it so I will do my best to avail from this opportunity.

The best thing that I can suggest is to set the deadline at least a few days, maybe even a week before the actual deadline, if that is possible, as that helps you get it done in time. This is what I personally do, as I find lots of close deadlines easier than one long deadline, and this is the same for most people. This is because you would rather have something now than something tomorrow or next week. If something seems a long way off, your brain just puts it off as it does not seem important. Another thing you can try is setting little deadlines, like you are going to do a paragraph a day, and you will find that once you get going you will just keep going. Another thing could be to turn off any distractions like the internet, your phone, headphones etc, and just concentrate on that for 25 mins, then take a 5 min break where you can look at youtube if you want, or give yourself some other kind of small treat, then do this again. After doing it three times, take a 30 mins break, and have a larger treat. Then repeat the procedure. To time it, use a timer like a kitchen one, rather than one on your phone, as this prevents you from using your phone instead of doing the work. You could also set yourself reminders in your calendar, as this may help you with remembering to do it on time. At my university I am attending some study skills workshops at lunch time, put on by what they call the learning success team, who specialise in helping students study better. You could see if your university has something similar.

Hope you find something that works for you.

I like to help, and give advice, but I can be brutally honest. Feel free to PM me if you want, for any reason. I have yet to find a topic that I will not talk about, regardless of how much, or little I know about the topic.

I know you've said you've already done it but I find a good way to motivate yourself is to think that if you get it done now, you won't have to worry about it later and all those things you want to do like watch youtube videos and play pokemon, you'll be able to do afterwards without having to stop to do work or worry about work you have.

It's always best to try and get your work done as soon as you can and remind yourself of all the time you'll have to do whatever you like after you've done it because otherwise you'll leave it till the last minute and it might not be as good as it would be if you did it sooner when you had more time to put more work into it.
