University Strike Action - October 31st 2013, 03:27 PM

If your lecturers at university go on strike, and you miss a lecture because of it, should you be entitled to a refund on your fees for that one lecture, or a reschedule of that lecture? or is it a matter of, they were on strike, you just have to miss out.

I personally think that you should either be entitled to a refund or a rescheduled lecture to make up for it. It is not the students fault that they missed the lecture after-all, and the student is paying a lot of money for the service which was not provided due to no fault of the student. Anywhere else, if you were paying for a service that was not provided, you would be entitled to a refund, why not here too?

What do others think?

I think a reschedule is a better option because students are paying for a higher education. I agree its not fair because it wasn't the students' fault that they missed the lecture, but they're using this time to try and get a degree. While a refund would be nice, I think it would be better to reschedule the lecture so that they can still learn the information they were planned to learn.

I think either reschedule or refund should be given an option. I think both is just giving way too flexible.

I may have missed something but here, we pay for the whole course in general.. How do you go about refunding a particular lecture?

Rescheduling is the ideal way but since students are taking different courses and have jobs, this is practically impossible in regards to satisfying everyone.

Ultimately, the teacher should just cram the material into 1 class or altogether leave out the less important material. I know this doesn't sound fair but it seems like the only way.

Here we pay per module, plus a bit extra for the extra services that the university provides us, like the student centre, the library, computing services, counselling/health service etc. I get the option of paying per term or per year, so, I could split it up into a per module and per lecture if i sat down and worked it out, but I would prefer a re-schedule, with the other lecture at the end of term, with extensions on coursework to match, plus a bit of compensation, as it is not just lectures that are cancelled, but also a number of the services that are being paid for that are not being provided too.

Cramming the content of that two hour lecture and one hour lab/tutorial into the rest of the term wont necessarily work, especially as one of my lectures has a different lecturer each week and is a different topic each week (it is on research and professional issues, so it is a different part each week with an expert in that area giving it), so, that could not really be crammed into the rest of the lectures. Plus cramming can mean that you do not have as much time, and therefore may have problems understanding the work. Luckily my lecturer was not on strike (not sure what would have happened to my coursework presentation if he was lol) but the lack of other services did.

I think there should be a reschedule of the lectures so the students can still learn what they need to and get the service they paid for.
