Cool should i change majors? - September 25th 2014, 10:28 AM

i just started my first semester at university! i've already got an associate degree under my belt, but its just in general studies.
i'm working towards a bachelor's in business administration.
here's the thing: I DONT REALLY LIKE IT. i'm terrible at math and sciences so business is exhausting me (even though its just a lot of math) i decided on it because the degree will get me a job and money, plus its the only one my parents agreed to.
here's the other thing: i just started a job at a tv station. i was surprised i got it. its just as a news/content specialist (working with cameras, teleprompter, soundboard, etc) but i find that i REALLY like it so far! i've also always had an interest in this kind of thing too. so i'm thinking of changing my major to something that will cater to my interest in this field and since i've got a foot in the door, even my asian parents aren't opposed to it (lol)
in the end, these are my goals: 1) i want money...to travel and also to support a future family. 2) this is a bit off a different tangent, but i want to be an author. i've been writing a book since jr. high and i definitely want to publish it, but yeah, i hope one day, its gets good enough that i can just be a full-time author...
ANYWAY my question is, what kind of major could i change to that would be good to get a job in media/broadcasting but can also be flexible?

I am not to sure what you answer but maybe doing a little bit of research into this and find out what courses you need to take to become what you want to be, You said that you work on a T.V. station maybe ask one of them what courses they took to get to where they are.

You can major in production or media & communications. There are many majors that specialize in media journalism, and that might be a much better outlet for you! These majors are still able to find many jobs in marketing, so I don't think it'd be a bad switch for money.

I would suggest doing research in the area of communication, media, stuff in that area. It's going to take some time for good money to begin coming in, but if you're at your current place of work and you like it... You can definitely change your major to better suit your career interests.

Traci gave you great suggestions of looking into majors such as media, communications, or journalism. You can always talk to advisers for each of these majors and do a bit of research to see which may fit.

I know you want money, but honestly, if you are doing something you don't like, you aren't going to perform very well, and you're going to dread going to work every day, meaning you may not put in your all. I get you want money, but you shouldn't trade your happiness for money, because this IS what you'll be doing for years and years.

As for your parents, you can't impress everyone all the time! It's YOUR happiness that is important!

I am in communications and it is a lot of writing, we also get to do stuff with graphics and web design... In my country, people who work in communications also get paid pretty good (like $60000, could even be $100 000 for top positions). It's closely linked to marketing (which you could get out of your business administration) and to journalism (which would satisfy your love of writing)

Also, if your parents are really adamant that you stay in your BBA program, you could consider taking your electives in film, communications and English or journalism. If you cover a lot of the 1st and 2nd year requirements you might be able to get a 1-2 minors OR dual major (if you focus on one area) and/or finish in one of the second degree part time.

In my opinion, considering you JUST landed the job, I would wait to change majors. However, the reality is that unless you're going to a top school, business majors (depending on what it is), aren't likely to land a high paying job. The exceptions would be finance and accounting. I know most accounting majors have to take up to at least calculus, but once you get past your pre-requisites, it's mostly memorizing laws... and is bound to have a stable job.

If your current situation with your job continues to be appealing, try switching, but don't switch majors just because you're having a rough time. The other problem I see switching to something like RTF is that MOST media companies don't want RTF majors because most RTF majors are irrelevant to the field which is why many of them are being re-worked.

As far as being an author, most people have difficulty becoming a "full-time" author, and even then, you don't need a degree to do that. In many ways a degree in writing will harm your perspective rather than help it. Have you tried looking into ghost writing? It's a more stable profession, though that too has it ups and downs.

If I were you, I'd pursue either accounting or finance, minor in RTF or English, and write in my spare time.

Your classes might be difficult, but think of it this way, it's only 4 years -- roughly.

Also, if you're terrible at math and sciences, try taking some developmental courses. Once you understand the foundation portions of math, it's difficult to be "bad" at math. In fact, most people who say they aren't math people just lack foundational skills and have a gap in their knowledge. Try some developmental courses, get some tutoring, GO TO KHANACADEMY!! (it's a website, it can make a math whiz out of anyone), and stick to your guns. I REALLY wouldn't change majors. I know it's a little dream crushing, but if your ultimate goal is to have something stable, you need to major in something stable. Media departments are changing so rapidly, and in another decade or so, who even knows what media will look like? Television stations might start disappearing like newspapers due to things like Netflix and Hulu. Accountants and Finance majors will always be necessary. And if you minor in RTF, well, then you know the RTF field and can work as an accountant for them. Try writing in your spare time? But I wouldn't hope to do it full time.
