Masters degrees and Future Careers - environment - February 20th 2015, 06:36 PM

Its been a while since I posted for myself, but I have exhausted all of my personal contacts and still have no idea what to do.

I know I want to get a masters degree and I decided that years ago. However, my final choice has changed rapidly depending on what my actual career goals shifts too.

Ok, lets's start here:

University - BA, sociology & religion

Current - marketing & pr

Passion - aboriginal culture and the environment

I would like to work in a public affairs typed capacity. I would like a masters degree with the environment. But there are so many choices. I also can't move where ever I want. Like no way in hell will I go to school in the USA because A) I like my universal health care and B) the costs of getting a masters there as an international student would be disgusting. I'm also in a relatively serious relationship and therefore I have to consider whether I'd be willing to move somewhere that he doesn't want to live (consequences: LDR or breaking up).

I also don't want to put my life on hold because of a man, that is incredibly unfair. I am already postponing things simply because he has a job and I don't. Lately, it has really started bothering me that what I really want is to move out west but I have to put that on hold because he has a job in the east - and the shitty thing is that I despise the city he lives in but the only way to be with him is to move there OR to do long distance... Yuck... The universities I like area also out west. It is a serious fucking problem. On one hand, I love him... On the other, why should I have to put my life on hold for him? He asked no such thing of me, I'm choosing to do it for him but still...

It's just a big complicated mess. I don't even know what I want.

Feel free to PM me if you ever need to chat or have questions

Well, I live in America and I gotta be honest... it's almost like why did I have to fall in love in college? But, don't ever stop your academic future. You obtain a master's degree and it's forever. A man? He may come and go. If you both can handle it, you can still keep him while obtaining your degree. It's up to you and him if you can accept each other's life. If he is willing to make it work with you, you have yourself a good deal. I hope you two can make it together. Besides, the more you focus on school the faster you may be able to settle down with him someday or live closer.

I don't know what it's like in England, but I almost decided to go to University, but I went to community college first to save me some loan money. My boyfriend and I went through this big ordeal over me living in a dorm 3 hours away from him. I decided not to go (not entirely because of him) but because of the cost of university in general- like, holy cow! It just isn't worth it. But, really it's whatever is in your heart. I wanted to continue college and still be with my man. I don't want to be like those couples in the movies where we never even got to finish our love story. (It's cheesy, I know). If we end up failing as a couple together somewhere in between, I'll know it was never meant to be in the long run, but I learned a lot. Definitely easier said than done, but I think we'll both understand in due time. Right now, focus your life on YOU. Because YOU are gonna be on your own side for the rest of your life.

We all make mistakes, but we do the best with what we can. Get that degree and finish school. It's so hard to make it out alive in this economy today.
