Basic English Skills Assignment 15 help. - March 7th 2015, 11:39 PM

Hello,

I'm needing help with English Skills. Here's my assignment 15 parts that I need help with.

Instructions:
For items 6 through 10, find the adjective clause in each sentence, then select the answer choice that identifies the following.
A. Simple Subject.
B. Predicate
C. The word in the sentence that the clause modifies.

The mechanic who gave the estimate no longer works here.
A. Subject: Who, Predicate: the estimate, word modified: works
B. Subject: Mechanic, Predicate: Gave, Word modified: Who
C. Subject: Who, Predicate: Gave, Word modified: Mechanic.

I think it's either A or C.

Re: Basic English Skills Assignment 15 help. - March 9th 2015, 10:08 AM

I think it is B.
Subject: Mechanic, Predicate: Gave, Word modified: Who

Every sentence has to have two parts: a subject and a verb (or predicate). The subject tells us 'who' or 'what' is the focus of the sentence. When we have a simple subject, there is only one noun that completes the action in the sentence. Here the mechanic is the only noun that completes the action. Gave is the verb (predicate) and who is the clause modifier.

'The mechanic no longer works here' is the main clause and 'gave the estimate' is the adjective clause which describes the mechanic.

I hope this helped.

predicate has to have a verb so you can cross out choice A. Then the subject is the mechanic so that's choice B. There are a few ways I came up with the answer, as I tried confirming it using a different way to get there and each time I came up with choice B.

Panama which joined Central America and South America is a small but important country.

A. subject which: predicate Joins: Word modified panama:

B. subject panama: predicate joins: word modified which.

C. subject panama: predicate which: Word modified country.

This one I'm not quite sure. I think it's C, but I'm not entirely sure.

I personally find the easiest way to do this is find the main clause and adjective clause. Here the main clause is 'Panama is a small but important country' and the adjective clause is 'which joined Central America and South America'
Panama is the only noun: Simple subject.
Join is the verb: Predicate.
Which is the clause modifier.

So I think it is B.

Thanks. Next sentence.

The foster home in which the child was placed was near his old neighborhood.

A. subject home: predicate Placed: Word modified Child.

B. Subject Home: predicate was placed: word Modified Old.

C. Subject Child: predicate Was Placed: Word modified Home.

I'd Say either B, or C.

Okay, I think I figured out the last two sentences.

Now instructions for sentences 11 through 15:

Find the noun claws in each sentence. Then, select the correct answer that identifies the following. The noun and predicate used in the noun clause, and the correct use of the clause in the sentence.

11. The manager promised that she would look for my lost roll of film.

A. subject film: predicate would: Use direct object.

B. subject manager: predicate look: use subject.

C. Subject She: predicate would look: use direct object.

I'm thinking it's B or C.
