Does anyone know the math level required for stats? - April 11th 2015, 10:18 PM

Hi! I'm a university student considering majoring in a social science. I was wondering if anyone knew the general math level required for the types of statistics classes required for majors like sociology and psychology.

"If you touch a spider web anywhere, you set the whole thing trembling. . . . As we move around this world and as we act with kindness, perhaps, or with indifference, or with hostility toward the people we meet, we too are setting the great spider web a-tremble. The life that I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place and time my touch will be felt. Our lives are linked. No person is an island."

Psych degree holder here. I never made it past algebra and I did fine in stats. It's different than the math you're used to. I personally found it easier. As a side note, if you want to major in the social sciences think about what you want to do and take a good look at your career options. Unless you want a masters degree you're pretty limited. My masters degree in counseling didn't work out so now I'm looking into other things that are similar. It might help to combine it with something else.

For sociology in my school you need to have an intro to sociology course to take social stats which is a 200 level course. Math level is not specified. However if you passed stats 113 which is a math course you can speak to an advisor and get exempt from taking social stats and just replace it with an elective in sociology. This is how it is in my university, as a sociology major. Your school may have similar rules. Best thing is to find out on your school website under psychology department and sociology department to check for each of those. Or you can speak to a department advisor or general advisor. Good luck!

I'm a psych major and I'm in stats right now. I've never been good at math (I barely passed it in high school), but I've done just fine in stats. It's a different kind of math, especially in the components required for social sciences. It's much more about logic and understanding how to read data than it is about solving different equations. I'm sure you'll do just fine in it!

I'm a public health major in statistics right now. The prerequisite for it was just an algebra class.

That should be a non-calculus level course. Though I could be wrong- I am sure it is just a basic stat class- similar to the AP stat i had in highschool- which focused on reading data , looking at tables, finding probabilities, etc. Should only require algebra.

Fellow psychology student here - I always struggled with maths through school but actually did very well in my Stats modules in this degree.

I was required to take pre-calculus before I could take stats, but my program was very odd, most majors that required stats even at my own university did not require pre-calc. It's usually college algebra, or maybe another similar class.

I actually did REALLY well in stats, despite the fact that I despise and suck at "real" math (like calculus). I only took data management in grade 12, which was basically a childish version of statistics, and it was more than enough. Because statistics is such a different kind of math, it's not like lots of calculus-ey things will help, and to be honest I don't even know what happens in algebra.

I did sociology stats. Most of us dreaded it was it was "hard" cause very mathey (again, just not "normal" math, and most of us are in the arts cause math was never our happy place, but I actually loved it. While most of my classmates really struggled, I got a high grade. I think it depends how your brain is wired
