I am a Junior in Highschool - May 11th 2009, 01:28 PM

I have a dilemma. I am doing shit in school right now, I don't know if I will make it to senior year and my guidance counselor told me I should drop out of school for a year get a paying job and then come back to school when I find the motivation. What should I do?

i don't think its a good idea to drop out for a year and go back, because i know if it were me i simply wouldn't go back. you'll most likely get out of the routine of lessons and all that, and personally i'd know i'd find it really hard to go back.

its pretty suprising to me that your guidance counsellor would suggest you dropping out, at my school they strongly discourage people from dropping out under any circumstances. plus, whos to say you won't just have even less motivation for school after a year out?

you could try your best to pass this year and then carry on to your senior year, or you could always repeat your junior year, it's not all that uncommon and a good way to get back on track.

..and our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears..

I agree with Elle. I suggest really trying to focus on getting your grades up (as long as you try there is possibility of success) and go back again next year just as you would normally. The summer off might just give you the motivation you need/are looking for, you never know. I strongly discourage taking a year off. In most cases people simply don't want to go back after a year off or they find themselves with even less motivation now that they've been out in the workworld.

Personally I say.. stick with it!

Don't listen to your guidance counselor.

You should speak to your teachers and see how you can bring up your grades. It is almost the end of the year, but I am sure you can make some improvement. Your motivation should be graduating with your class.

I strongly feel that you should not drop out. I don't know what this guidance counselor is thinking, but often when people drop out, they never go back. Just think - it's only one more year. The last eleven years of your school career will have been wasted if you drop out. Even graduating with low grades is better than not graduating at all. If you don't think you're going to pass this year, go to summer school. Next year, you need to figure out a plan with your teachers on how to raise your grades. Personally, I got out of public school this year and I've been doing all my classes and assignments online. My grades improved drastically and I highly recommend doing this if you can. Besides, the junior year is the hardest. Your senior year will be much easier. Good luck with everything and please don't give up!

Your guidance counselor is not worth listening to. Dropping out then coming back to school increases the chances of you doing even worse, which makes me think that he/she has next to no clue what they're talking about. If I were you, then I'd stay in school, get a tutor, ask the teacher or friends. If you don't have a particular career in mind, then that's fine. The motivation can be to pass junior year in order to be one step closer to attaining your success.

Keep going to school, its the best for your future.

You shouldn't drop out of school. Find the motivation that you need to be successful in school. Have people in your life that are motivated and that have bright futures. If you drop out of school, I can surely tell you that you will regret it.

With all do respect, your guidance counselor is an idiot. I don't understand why they would tell you that. Do not drop out of school. Talk to each teacher in which class you are failing, stay with them after school or whatever, but do not drop out.

Well I can see where your guidance counsellor is coming from - you don't want to go into Seniors and have failing grades and such. However, I dont think dropping out for a year is going to help much, either. Most likely, after a year, you wont want to go back. It will get you out of a school-like routine. I suggest that you try find motivation to do well in school right now. Think about what this means to you and try to get your act together. Pick up your grades and prove your guidance counsellor wrong.
Hope it works out.
